Shotgun Riot

Glasstone Records sent us press kit a few months back, we are in the process of endorsing several of their bands. shotgunYou should have seen the stack of contracts I had to sign, my hand was aching at the end of it! :).  When we get them all back I will take a picture with them all so you can see why, haha. We just got the first contracts back from Neil, Tom and Adam of Shotgun Riot. I think this is out first hardcore punk endorsee. They definently have a real gritty hardcore sound to them that any deep rock fan can appreciate. I normally don’t listen to the more hardcore stuff but you actually hear what these guys are saying so it is enjoyable and not so tough on the ears. Definently a band you would have to turn up to the max to get the full effect of. This band is located in London, UK. Check out their myspace to sample their music. Also, look out for more posts soon about Glasstone Records and new bands to be endorsed.

Black Raven

black_ravenThe Black Raven custom picks have become so popular! Here is a few that we ran this week and wanted to share with you. We can imprint white and full color imprints on the Black Raven. Of course white imprints the best on black, however, don’t hesistate to try other colors! Red and White really stand out on the Black Raven because they are brighter colors and look great together. We don’t really suggest designs with very fine detailing however you can always ask if you are unsure if it would turn out or not. Colors like purple, red, bright green, and dark orange or yellow really look best on this pick. It’s usually best to use a design that has solid colors in it rather than a gradient or excessive shading in it.  We have it available in the traditional sizes of thin, medium and heavy.

Guitar Pick News – Illegal Guitar Pick Case

Woman Pleads Guilty for Selling Illegal Sea Turtle Guitar Picks

Associated Press
May 8, 2009

“A 54-year-old Sonoma County woman has pleaded guilty to charges of illegally importing guitar picks made from endangered sea turtle shells. The U.S. atlantichawksbillseaturtle2attorney’s office says Qing Song pleaded guilty to one felony Wednesday. She was sentenced to 10 months of home confinement and a $2,000 fine. Song admitted to importing picks or raw shells of the hawksbill sea turtle from China and selling them in the United States. Some musicians covet the turtle shells instead of ordinary plastic picks because they believe they produce a superior tone. It is illegal to trade endangered wildlife without a valid permit for scientific research or other approved, noncommercial use.”

Hmmm…. I guess she has never heard of Clayton Ultems. 🙂

Rockin’ Wedding Pick!

This wedding pick is by far a staff favorite! michelleWe really liked how it is kind of like a comic type drawing. These colors turned out great on the white delrin because the bright white background allowed the colors to really pop. It was originally tested on Acetal which gave it a softer look, however, with these colors and the sharp detail in the lines it was better suited to white delrin. If we haven’t mentioned it before Delrin is great for fine lines, and intriciate detailing. The soft, smooth surface allows for sharp imprinting, as you can see in the text on the backside.

Skulls!

I don’t know what’s going on this week, but we’ve had an unusal amount of orders for skulls this past week. Here are a few that are my favorite. I really like the Otis pick, the skull rocks that hat! skullI also really like the overbleed skull on the Acetal Rounded Triangle. As you can see it has a two sided imprint on it. The thinner the Acetal is the more transparent it becomes so if you are going to have it imprinted with two sides we would suggest atleast getting .63mm or thicker. The rest were printed on the Delrin material. We have stock picks available that feature different skull designs. These are the Demonic Skulls of course, they come with 6 different designs. They are printed on Delrin, and available in thin, medium and heavy. You can now order them direct for our website by clicking here.

Chick Picks!

chickpicks

We’ve been making picks for the company Chick Picks for a couple of years now. They sell guitar pick earrings. They have some very intricite designs, and even add accents to the guitar picks that completely look like the picks were made for earrings. You can check out their website by clicking here. These are a couple of picks we did for them this week that we wanted to share. They always order White Delrin because it works very well with the intricate overbleeds they usually use. The snakeskin turned outpicks1 gorgeous on the delrin with the mixutre of bright and dark, it looks as if the pick is textured however it is smooth to the touch. They also went with a simpler flower design that looks very sharp!

Overbleeds on Pearl

diego Here is a really neat pick that I thought we could share today.  We don’t often print overbleeds on Pearl, but this one really came out looking stunning. On our Pearl material we use transparent inks with the exception of black, so that the pearl can show through to the image. At first we weren’t to sure about this one due to the intense colors, however, it turned out better then any of our expecations! It has a really cool water effect to it. This is a good example of an overbleed that suites the pearl material well. If you are looking to do an overbleed on pearl you should think of using lighter colors rather then dark otherwise the pearl won’t show through quite as well and may clash too much. If you are interested in getting an overbleed like this on pearl and are unsure about whether or not it would work please feel free to email us at questions@steveclayton.com and we can help you decide!

Sweetheart Picks

So through the years I’ve seen quite a few picks made that I label “sweetheart” picks. These picks have speical sayings for a loved one on them. red_picksWell, my boyfriend is being deployed to Iraq for a year (he is in the National Guard) so I thought I would make him some picks with 100 different love notes and inspirational sayings on them for when he is missing home. Even though they were ooey gooey he really appreciated them! If you are interested in creating custom guitar picks for someone who is deployed we can ship direct to any country, and can ship to APO addresses as well. The cost of shipping is only $14! I made his on Colored Pearl and the Rounded Triangle shape so that more text could fit on it. They made from our Colored Pearl picks in a color that he selected from our online color chart, and I think it couldn’t look more gorgeous with the pearl affect. The photo to the right is a scan of some of his favorite ones.

Ultem vs. Tortoiseshell

A loyal customer e-mailed us today asking about the difference between our Ultem pick and authentic Tortoiseshell picks. What a great question for today’s post. Most of you have probably never played with real tortoiseshell before. This is because it became illegal to produce/import tortoiseshell into the United States in 1947, which was before even I was born! A lot of guitar picks are made to have the appearance of tortoiseshell such as our cork-grip picks. However these are actually made of celluloid. Some people bring me some pretty convincing celluloid and tell me they have a true tortoiseshell pick, when almost always they don’t. Not sure if you have a real one or fake? Quickly rub the pick in-between cloth several times to create mild heat, if the picks starts to smell like camphor or vicks vabor rub, that is a celluloid plastic pick. They smell strong! Cow horn is also often passed off as tortoiseshell. If the pick is made out of cow horn then it will have a milky white appearance in parts of the pick.tort

People allude to the authentic tortoiseshell as the holy grail of picks… and are sought after. Well I have played many in my life-time and here are my thoughts on them. They sound nice, with a nice tone, but they break and sometimes even explode in your hand which is useless during a performance. Also the edges get rough. In my personal opinion, Ultem creates a much brighter, cleaner sound with better overtones, plus is much more durable. In the end when it comes to authentic tortoiseshell, I recommend saving your money and the turtles.

Custom Picks – White Delrin

So I decided to pull out my favorite White Delrin picks for the month…and I came up with quite a few. White Delrin is probably my

Custom Guitar Picks

Custom Guitar Picks

favorite material that we have just because of how well every logo seems to turn out on it. It is a solid bright white guitar pick, so everything really pops on it. As you can see in the White Rose pick, and the VC pick the brighter colors look very nice and pop out on it. I also thought that the B&P photo turned out gorgeous on this material. All the details of the photo came out very crisp and clear. There’s also a wedding pick in the pile somewhere :), in the spring/summer months we do several orders for weddings. The most popular saying is something like Stephanie Picked John, or John Picked Stephanie with the date. But I’ve been seeing a lot of unique ones lately with designs surrounding their intials. Congrats to all the newly weds! If your looking for a high quality pick but are also interested in your image really standing out I would suggest getting the white delrin. It will definitely suite these needs.

Ed Hardy – Guitar Picks

hardy_picksCurrently our Ed Hardy picks are selling like crazy, so I thought I would take a moment today to talk about the pick line.  If you don’t already know about Ed Hardy, once you know you will start seeing it every where, especially on celebrities and musicians.  Their clothing and other items feature colorful classic tattoo designs by Don Ed Hardy.  Clayton, Inc. started making Ed Hardy guitar picks over 3 years ago. When we started the brand wasn’t that strong, but we really saw the potential for it, and since then taboutus_ed_picheaboutus_christian61 brand has really exploded!  Our Ed Hardy picks are printed on our premium pearl celluloid material. The bright pearly white really sets off the colorful Ed Hardy images.  You can check out many of the Ed Hardy items on their website here: Ed Hardy Website.

Don Ed Hardy (pictured left) the artist behind the design is known as “the godfather of modern tattoo”, for his sophistication, depth and sense of experimentstaion. His art is really amazing and I encourage you to take a look at them.  The artwork got turned into a huge success by designer Christian Audigier (pictured right). Christian is the designer of other popular lines such as SMET™ and Von Dutch™. Christian has built a fervent following for his Ed Hardy® and the eponymous Christian Audigier™ brands. Celebrities such as Madonna, Britney Spears, and Kanye West, among others are frequently seen wearing his unique designs.

A Dull Science

We just recently endorsed the band A Dull Science out of California. They have a good blend of a punk/pop sound to them. With some really great adslyrics, that everyone can relate to, like their song “Cheaters never prosper”. This song has some killer lyrics to it, with a catchy chorus that I couldn’t help singing along to while looking over their press kit. Even better these guys seem to have a sense of humor which is refreshing to see since some bands can be so serious as they get more famous :).

Blast from the Past

We had a very fun e-mail come to us in our questions@steveclayton.com box on Friday. The e-mail was telling us about a photo of Steve Clayton located on a scan0026claytonTed Greene Site. The picture has Steve Clayton back in the mid 70’s. Usually when people send us pictures of Steve they are more current, so it was fun to see him from back in the day. You can click on the picture to see other photos from the party Steve was at. The album contains many other people from the early music scene (i.e. Mel Bay, Tommy Tedesco, Mel Taylor). There are also early pictures of the NAMM show. For anyone who doesn’t know who Ted Greene is, he is one of the most accomplished guitarists of his generation. Steve knew Ted back when Ted tedgreene-2was teaching, and Steve himself was a guitar student of Ted. Steve says that Ted was so advanced with his guitar playing, he could get his guitar to bark and even crow, along with some other really bizarre sounds you never thought a guitar could make. Ted is probably best known for his chord book Chord Chemisty. It is a thorough book for guitarists that explains in detail the applications and understandings of chords. It is really a book that a guitarist shouldn’t be without. It is especially helpful to those who are trying to self teach themselves.
