(Ultem)ate

Here are some cool new custom guitar picks ordered by one of our customers! :

JEFFLATHAM

These picks were made on our classic Ultem material. Ultem picks are known for best resembling the sound quality of a true tortoiseshell pick without being actually made from tortoiseshell. They are light tan/gold in color, and they work great with brown and black designs like the one shown. The shape of these picks is rounded triangle, which is a popular choice amongst bassists. Pick of the Week — Maybe Refuge

This week’s Pick of the Week was ordered by guitarist Hiu—who sometimes go by the alias/nickname: LVXS. Hiu plays the bass in a band called Maybe Refuge. They’re a 4-piece alternative rock/pop band from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and they write and play mostly original music. Combining a deep, story-telling writing style, modern guitar tone, and a groovy, driving rhythm section, the band can be described as being fun, quirky, and modern, but with a bold underlying message to possibly bring “refuge” to their listeners. They currently have an EP out that’s available via their webstore or on iTunes and they’re working on a new album right now. They’ve got another gig coming up in Toronto as they open for another local band and that’s going to be on December 27th. You can find details and an event on their facebook page: www.facebook.com/mayberefuge.
The official website is www.mayberefuge.com but you can also find the band on twitter and youtube by searching “Maybe Refuge.”
The Maybe Refuge Picks were made on our acetal pick material in the rounded triangle shape. We like how Hiu used the full bleed option to stretch the band logo like a banner across the pick, they turned out really great! To order your own custom guitar picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!

Pick of the Week — Sixteen Candles

This week’s Pick of the Week was created for the band Sixteen Candles.
Band Bio: Established in 2003. 16 Candles makes it their personal duty and pleasure to bring all the great 80′s songs you love to life in full force. Their attention to detail and commitment to entertainment captivates audiences and inspires new ways of dancing and thinking (not to mention drinking). The members are 5 fun-loving guys with a simple love for the music of years gone by and a mission to fuse nostalgia and style to create a sight/sound spectacular unlike any other.
To learn more about Sixteen Candles, visit their sites:
website: www.sixteencandlesband.com
facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sixteencandlesband
twitter: http://twitter.com/16candlesband
The Sixteen Candles picks were made on our white pearl material. White pearl is always a good choice for supporting designs with a gradient, such as the green 16 Candles logo. The band also chose to have a rounded triangles shape for the picks. The rounded triangle is an over-sized pick shape, and allows for optimal design space. Pick of the Week — Night Fevers

This week’s Pick of the Week is for the band Night Fevers. They are based out of  Brooklyn, NY. Members are Jack Tangney, Gerard Lange, William Tully, Danny Rocco, and Brian Bunce. Brian, Gerard, and Danny used the picks for the first time at a show the other week and they say that they love the way they came out, great print quality and feel.
Songs from Night Fevers’ first EP called “Swear Words” are currently being played on various shows on MTV and they can be found on iTunes, and Spotify.
They just released their 2nd EP called “Too Bright To Hide It” and it can be found at http://nightfeversmusic.bandcamp.com/
To learn more about Night Fevers, visit their facebook at www.facebook.com/NightFevers
Also, here is a fun live video of their single “Way I Am:” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLj0XpcN2w0
The Night Fevers picks were made on our yellow delrin guitar pick material in the oversized rounded triangle shape. We love the classic simplicity of their logo; it looks very clean and professional, and the picks make great novelties for fans of the band. Pick of the Week — Ashturn

We are excited to present this week’s Pick of the Week, which was made for the band Ashturn. “Ashturn is a Flemish (Belgian) band formed by Steve (drums), Raf (bass) and Mark (guitar) in 2003.  After about a year of rehearsals and song writing Raf switched his bass guitar for a microphone and Tom joined the band as the new bass player.  Dennis, who used to be in another band with Steve and Raf, joined the band as the second guitar player a few months later.  8 years later, Ashturn still has the same line-up.  They are a bunch of very good friends who mainly want to have fun and who really enjoy making music together (which is probably the reason they have already survived this long as a band).

“Ashturn plays a healthy mix of metal and hardcore and is influenced by a lot of modern and classic bands in both these genres.  They’ve played a lot of gigs in youth clubs, rock bars and on the occasional festival, mainly in the Flemish part of Belgium but also occasionally abroad.  One of the festival gigs they played was the result of Ashturn getting the most votes from the audience at a local rock contest.  Their latest recording effort is an EP called “Heaven or a dark cold day in hell” which can be listened to for free in it’s entirety at www.ashturn.com. ”

“Ashturn is at the moment rehearsing for some upcoming gigs.  In about two months time work will begin on some new songs which will hopefully lead to new recording sessions later. ”
To learn more about Ashturn, visit any of the following sites:

Website: www.ashturn.com
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ashturn/20845893339
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/ashturnmusic
Bass player Tom talks about his experience with Clayton guitar picks:

“As a bass player, I’ve always preferred the bigger rounded triangle shape picks.  I play a down tuned 5 string bass so I need something to grab on to while furiously hitting the B string 🙂  I had been using the same picks for years (made by a major brand) so I started to look for a company that could make me some picks with a custom design that are also equally comfortable as the ones I was used too.  This took a lot of research.  No company seemed to offer the right combination of materials, thickness, shape and printing possibilities that I was looking for until I found the website of Clayton Custom.  A few minutes of trying out the fantastic custom guitar pick designer led me to the conclusion that my search had ended.  For the design I chose one of the very nice band logo’s that was made by our guitar player Mark Vandebroek. Once the picks arrived I was extremely happy with the quality.  These picks definitely offer the comfort I was looking for.  On top of that, they were actually a tiny bit stiffer than the ones from my old brand which actually improved the clear, natural but also very punchy sound I am always looking for!  So, great job by Clayton custom!  Now I just need to make sure I can hold on to them as everyone I show them to (fans, fellow musicians, family and friends)  wants to keep one for him/herself!
Ashturn’s picks were made on our acetal guitar pick material, in the rounded triangle shape. We especially like how the shape of the picks fit really nicely with the band logo. To create and order your own custom guitar picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!

Pick of the Week — The Bebe Buell Band (Enzo Penizzotto)

This week’s Pick of the Week was created and ordered by customer Enzo Penizzotto. He is currently the bass player in The Bebe Buell Band (Bebe is Liv Tyler’s mother). The band consists of Bebe on vocals, Jim Walls (Das Damen) & Pete Marshall on guitar (Iggy Pop, Samhain), Zac Lasher (U-Melt) on keys, Louisa Mysteria Bradshaw (Angels are jealous of her singing voice) on backgrounds and New Jersey’s own Sarah Tomek on drums. They have a new album called “Hard Love” – the pick stems from the album artwork. Enzo played with Bebe back in 1998-2000 before joining up with joan jett in 2000. He reunited with her last year in July. Other artists that Enzo has worked with include joan jett (2000-2010), the Batusis (with Cheetah Chrome from the Dead Boys and Sylvain Sylvain from the New York Dolls), played on the newest Beggars & Thieves “We are the Broken Hearted” album recently released on Frontiers label, also Eddie Sperry’s Screed the Psychological Profile album.  In his downtime while at home, Enzo also subs on a Broadway musical show called Memphis. And he teaches from time to time at The School of Rock in Manhattan.  He was a founding member of his own band Speed McQueen, which he started at 19 with Mark Lewis (produced Fly Leaf) on guitar/vocals and Joey Crifo on drums. Speed McQueen was picked up by Mercury records and had records produced by Tim Patalan (Sponge) and Ed Stasium (Ramones, Rolling Stones, etc) and toured extensively. Enzo was born in New York City and still lives there. He has been playing the bass since he was 14 years old. Professionally since he was 19 years old. Enzo says that he has been using Clayton picks forever, specifically the Acetal Rounded Triangle in a 1mm gauge. Find out more about Enzo and his career  at www.enzopenizzotto.com. We thought that the Hard Love picks were a perfect feature design for the day after Valentine’s Day! Pick of the Week — Jeff Latham Band

This week’s Pick of the Week was created by Jeff Latham for the Jeff Latham band. We really liked the full color logo that was printed on our white pearl rounded triangle picks. Here is a little about Jeff and his band: “Growing up in West Texas on a heavy diet of mom’s Johnny Paycheck and dad’s Don Williams, Jeff Latham was greatly influenced by the country classics which is decidedly evident in his voice.  From George Jones and Hank Williams Jr. to contemporary country artists Toby Keith and Jason Aldean. The Jeff Latham Band’s set list attempts to strike a balance between the old and the new with stops in the Texas singer/songwriter scene along the way. Their “Rocky-Tonk” style essentially captures the essence of Texas dive-bar country. Sit down, have a drink, or get up and dance. Either way, you will enjoy the show. To find out more about The Jeff Latham Band, visit www.thejefflathamband.com. Ultem-ate

Ultem material guitar picks are the ultimate in quality! Even on dull strings, these picks are sure to create crisp, clean tones. The sound of these picks is meant to resemble that of true tortoiseshell picks, but, unlike real tortoiseshell, they are not susceptible to fractures. These are some of the strongest picks on the market, and you will be sure to love the bright sounds that they produce! They are available in eight different gauges. They are tan in color, and available with the Clayton eagle logo in white epoxy (http://www.steveclayton.com/ultem.php), or for customization (http://www.claytoncustom.com)! They are also offered in three different shapes including standard, rounded triangle, and small teardrop.

Pick of the Week — Midnight Run

This week’s Pick of the Week is for a band called Midnight Run. These picks were created on our white pearl material, and we love how Midnight Run’s artwork, with its bold colors, has a really cool 3-D look. They also chose a rounded triangle shape which added extra space for the design. Here is a little info about the band: “Dedicated to replicating the sounds of the phenomenal band, Journey, Midnight Run delivers incredible vocals, incredible sound and an incredible show. Each musician is committed to providing as true a sound to the original Journey band as possible, and the result is an experience that takes listeners back to times they cherish, while introducing a new generation to music they can love. Journey music shaped the 70s and 80s and today Journey continues to tour and create new albums, showcasing resiliency and talent. Midnight Run’s talents and commitment to perfection delivers music that is technically perfect, soulful and memorable. In the end, what separates good bands from great bands is passion. The five musicians of Midnight Run have always been passionate about music. Each took a different path in developing their talents and arriving at where they are today. Good tribute bands are dedicated to the music of the band they are covering. There’s lots of self-reflection and a continual dedication to the music. The work of Midnight Run in covering the Journey songbook is in itself a tribute to the music and a commitment to listeners to have a fantastic experience hearing the band. Midnight Run delivers: in music; in vocals; in showmanship; and especially in passion. A Midnight Run show is filled with energy and soul, whether it’s the driving beat of Any Way You Want It or the tender ballad When You Love a Woman. Lots of audience dancing and singing-along is standard fare at a Midnight Run show. The Midnight Run experience is excellent for everyone – those who book them appreciate the professionalism and promptness, and those who hear Midnight Run savor memories and appreciate the music of Journey all over again. Pick of the Week — Taking Fire

This week’s Pick of the Week was created for the band Taking Fire. “Near the end of 2009, former members of A Bitter End Ash Abdullah, Gabe Zagarolli, and O’bryan Ruiz hooked up with virtuoso guitarist and guitar instructor Albert Burrola and young phenom guitar shredder Anthony Burrola. All sharing in similar musical taste and the need to create the most dynamic, intense, and melodic music they could, the five musicians began collaborating on their first album together under a new name; Taking Fire. Brutal, intelligent, thought-provoking and inspiring are of but a few words that describe Taking Fire’s brand of metal. Since their union, the band has played all over the Los Angeles and Orange County areas, gaining new fans at every show. Recently, Taking Fire finished up the recording of their debut album ‘Battle Plan.'” Find out more about Taking Fire on their ReverbNation site at http://www.reverbnation.com/c./rpk/174536. Pick of the Week — The Pears

This week’s Pick of the Week is an acetal rounded triangle pick with an awesome design created for a band called The Pears. “The Pears are a musical trio, formed in 2010, and are located 50 miles north of NYC, in the western portion of Connecticut. Their music spans all generations with a focus on the 90s and 2000s. Each of the band members brings a unique talent to their arrangements, often delivering a new perspective on a popular composition. Acoustic in nature, the band carries a huge sound with a small footprint, and provides an ever-changing mix of covers and originals. While high energy alternative music is the favorite genre of the band, The Pears deliver a complete palette of music for everyone to enjoy. The band’s chemistry and passion for music has taken them to multiple venues, enjoying every second of their performances, while casting a contagious energy across their audiences. The band is planning to release their original music in the fall of 2011.” The Pears would like to thank Clayton USA for the opportunity to participate in their Pick of the Week blog. The Pears members: Angela – Vocals, Guitar; Chuck – Guitar, Vocals, Mandolin; and Nancy- Percussion, Vocals. Pick of the Week — Natalie Wattre

This week’s Pick of the Week was created by musician Natalie Wattré. “Natalie came up as a musician in the LA band the Extinct. She was one of the 2 large contributors of songs to the bands extensive repertoire. In the mid 1990’s the Extinct was signed to Sony Publishing. In 1997 Natalie left the Extinct and soon after found that she was more inclined to the independent way of life which lead to the beginning of Swirly Girl Records. Critics have said that her voice is ‘reminiscent of Janis Joplin’, ‘akin to the Tracy Chapman/Joan Armatrading school of throaty, emotional expression.’, ‘Emotionally driven’ and ‘Vocals that hold nothing back’. Her songwriting has been described as ‘Storytelling that makes the listener realize the unapparent realities of their surroundings. Music of reminiscence. Music to base your life on.'” Find out more about Natalie and her music at www.NatalieWattre.com. Natalie’s very classy pick design was produced on our acetal rounded triangle pick material. Pick of the Week — MESSER

This week’s Pick of the Week is an awesome, high-detail design submitted by the band MESSER. Here is some info about them from their Reverbnation site:

“MESSER started writing late July 2009. With only a handful of shows since then, the Dallas, Texas, group has raised the attention of industry and fans alike by the lightning fast rise of popularity, both locally and nationally. Although some bands prefer not to be compared to anyone, MESSER finds that fans of Soundgarden’s candor, Velvet Revolver’s swagger and the grind of Motley Crue’s music are taking notice. Their music can be described as a nod to the 90’s, with their roots firmly planted in the present, while still honing their original sound for 2011 and beyond. Together Javier Contreras – Guitar/Vocals, Dereak – Lead vocals, Kenn Youngar – Drums, and Maddox – Bass/Vocals, provide somewhat of a local super group assault on the senses.” Find out more about MESSER at reverbnation.com/messer. The pick shown is a red delrin pick, in a .50mm gauge, rounded triangle shape. Design your own custom picks today at www.claytoncustom.com!

The Beauty of Pearls

Here at Clayton, we offer three different white picks for custom design, including white delrin, acetal, and white pearl. If you are looking for a classy pick that is great for playing, or for use as a promotional tool, white pearl is optimal. Our white pearl picks have glossy finish, and they are marbleized, so they automatically have the “upscale look.” White pearls can be great with either single or full color designs, as shown in the image below. White pearl picks are also very popular for weddings, since they look nice and can support a design with any color in it. Our white pearl picks are available in six gauges ranging from a very thin .38 to an extra heavy 1.26. There are also two different shapes available for white pearl picks; standard (left pick in photo) and rounded triangle  (right pick in photo). Design your white pearl pick on our custom website today!

Shape Shift

The most popular choice for custom guitar picks is, hands down, our standard shape picks. But some guitarists prefer our rounded triangle picks. These are oversized shaped picks, with equilateral sides. Many guitar players like the larger size of these picks because they are easier to hold on to. This shape is available in a few of our different pick materials. We have rounded triangle in our colored delrin, acetal, ultem, colored pearl and white pearl material. Many designers also like to choose this shape simply for the fact that a rounded triangle pick will allow for more design space. Shown here are examples of designs that came out really well and were well-suited for this pick shape. So, if you would like to try something new, design your rounded triangle pick today at www.claytoncustom.com.

Getting Funky with the Miller Anderson Band

A little while ago, we posted a blog about customers of Steve Clayton, Inc. using caricatures for their custom pick designs. Shown here is a perfect example of this type of design submitted by Kris Gray, bassist for the Miller Anderson Band. The pick is a rounded triangle acetal, 1.26mm gauge, with a double sided imprint. Kris said that he doesn’t always use picks (when playing) but when he does, ours are always the best, and he gets asked for them a lot so he wanted some to have as give-aways. These picks are a perfect item for Kris to give to his fans, with his name on one side and a cartoon image of him on the other. A little about the band: Miller Anderson himself played at Woodstock, as singer and guitarist for The Keef Hartley Band. He has since worked with Mountain, T Rex, Deep Purple, Donovan, Savoy Brown and Spencer Davis. The band is currently touring Europe, with upcoming performances in the UK, Poland, and Germany. You can check out a video of their performance of High Tide and High Water here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcI1MFcLElE, and be sure to look for Kris on the bass! You can also visit their website at www.milleranderson.co.uk. To design your give-away pick: Our Custom Design Site.

Get the Classic Look

At Steve Clayton, we offer a variety of picks for custom design. One of the materials that can be used for custom creations is called ultem. Ultem picks are a favorite of our customers because of the high tone quality that they provide, and the grainy non-slip feel of the material itself. Ultem picks are available in three different shapes; standard, rounded triangle, and teardrop. You may also choose from 8 different gauges, ranging from a very flexible .38mm to an extra-heavy 1.2mm. Ultem picks can work with designs of single or multiple colors. However, when you design your custom ultem pick on our design site, keep in mind that black, brown, and red are the print color options available. Don’t be shy to use all three colors in your design, because, as you can see by the image shown here, they all look great against the tan background of the pick. So, if you are looking for a classic look for your personal picks, give ultem a try!

The Classic Crime Signs With Steve Clayton

The Classic Crime has now signed with Steve Clayton. We are excited to support such a talented band from the Seattle area. Vagabonds debuted as the #4 best selling Rock album on Itunes and was as high as #20 on the top overall 100 albums on Itunes.  The band has nearly 10 million plays on Myspace. Bassist Alan Clark talks about why he chooses Steve Clayton Picks “I started using Clayton acetal triangle (.88 mm) picks 5 years ago when we started touring as The Classic Crime. The picks I was using before did not feel comfortable for my style of bass playing. I needed something with a little bit more surface to hold on to. The triangle shaped really helps because it doesn’t matter if the pick turns on me It’s the same shape all around. I’ve only broken one for the 5 years I’ve been playing them. I actually lose them or sign them for fans before they get worn out or break. So I’ve never used them to their full potential.” If you would like to learn more about The Classic Crime be sure to check out their website http://www.theclassiccrime.com/.

Maximize Your Design Space

Here at Clayton, we love to see the different designs that our customers submit to go on our custom guitar picks. Sometimes we notice that people want to include a lot of information on their picks, or they have a design that has a lot of detail and takes up quite a bit of space. We know that guitar picks are small, and sometimes it is hard to cram everything you want into a small space. This is why we wanted to offer a solution to the problem; learn how to maximize your guitar pick design space!! The first move is to choose the rounded triangle shape. Of course, the shape of a pick can be a personal preference for guitarists, but if you are focusing on the design aspect, the rounded triangle picks, like the ones shown here, will definitely give you the most design space. We offer rounded triangle in our acetal, white pearl, ultem, colored delrin, and colored pearl picks. Then, if you want even a little more space, choose the full bleed option in the website designer. This allows your design to run all the way to the edge of the pick, instead of having a border. All three picks shown in the image below are full bleed rounded triangle designs. Rounded Triangles. More Design Space And a Unique Look

We don’t just have standard shape picks for your designs. Checkout these rounded triangle picks these customers came up with. The rounded triangle picks are very popular as you can tell from our featured artist stories. Many bass players and guitar players will pick the rounded triangle shape to give them a little more surface to hold while playing. These picks also provide more space for your design than our standard shape picks. With these larger picks you are also able to enlarge your design or sort of like, zoom in on the design and make it easier to see. The picks in the picture here are with the materials ultem, green delrin, acetal, white pearl, and an orange delrin. These picks customers designed had lots of info such as business name, phone number, and websites to promote themselves. In the claytoncustom.com site once you pick the material you’ll then see what pick shapes come in that material.
