Pick of the Week — Lisa Matassa

This week’s Pick of the Week is for artist Lisa Matassa. Operatically trained as a child, and with a resonantly powerful pop voice, Lisa recorded two top-10 dance singles before she was 20. The songs were huge hits in the U.S. and abroad, earning her performing slots in concerts with such acts as Taylor Dayne, Brenda K. Starr and TKA. Born on Long Island, but raised in south Florida, Lisa had always loved singing along to records by Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash, and she realized more and more that country music was where her heart was. Capitalizing on country’s contemporary rock-tinged arrangements, Lisa found she could blend the natural heartfelt soul of country with her own stylized brand of New York edginess. She is now considered Long Island’s first bona fide country artist and has opened shows for Dierks Bentley, Leann Rimes, Thompson Square, Eric Church and, most recently, Ronnie Dunn at a “Vets Rock” concert at Brookhaven Amphitheatre in Farmingville, NY. Recently, Lisa was asked to sing the U.S. and Canadian anthems during the Delaware Ohio County Fair as part of the event’s prestigious Little Brown Jug harness racing event, which draws thousands of fans annually. As Lisa’s career gains momentum, and her new-release album Somebody’s Baby continues gathering national attention through digital downloads, streaming and radio programming, it’s a sure bet Long Island won’t be the only place where the name Lisa Matassa generates real excitement in country music.

Pro Lemon vs. Pro Shine

We get asked often what the difference between our Pro Lemon polish and Pro Shine is. Along with this question we are usually asked if they are non-toxic. The answer to that is yes, they both are non-toxic :-). The Pro Lemon is an oil-based shine. It can be used to polish your guitar or piano, even your furniture, and condition your fret board. The Pro Shine guitar polish is special, as it will not lead to any wax build-up from continual usage.  We suggest that you shake the guitar polish before applying. Both products offer the same high quality finish for your guitar; it is just a matter of personal preference for which one is chosen. Seeking a protective wax finish? Then try out our Carnauba wax as this product would be best for that :-).

Brantley Gilbert

We have just finished up a set of new picks for our new endorsed artist Brantley Gilbert! He uses Black Raven 0.80mm in rounded triangle shape. Our Black Raven picks  have  been specially formulated to reduce annoying string pop. It also has a matte surface that allows you to hang on to your pick without any unwanted slippage.  For those of you who have not heard Brantley’s music you can head on over to http://www.brantleygilbert.com for more information and music! A couple of his songs include, “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” and “Country Must Be Country Wide”.

Creative Wedding Picks

Today we wanted to show off some of the creative wedding guitar picks designs that our customers have created! Custom wedding picks have become a very popular item, and they are used as favors, decorations, gifts, thank-you’s and announcements! Let your creativity loose by creating a really unique design like those shown below:

To the far left, the pick design mimics the opening title of The Simpsons TV show, but of course is replaced by the couple’s last name. This is a full bleed design on our acetal material guitar picks. For the middle pick, the couple chose to use a caricature of themselves (also full bleed art on acetal material). For the pick on the far right, the design is a very pretty bird and anchor graphic, and on the back of the picks is printed the couple’s names, their wedding date, and the the phrase “Flying High and Steady.” These were done on our white pearl picks, which helps to showcase the beautiful colors of the graphic and gives the picks a very classy “wedding look.”

Because of the popularity of wedding guitar picks, we have made a new website specifically to share designs and ideas; www.customweddingpicks.com. You can contact us directly with questions regarding wedding picks or how to order at weddingpicks@steveclayton.com and we will be happy to assist you. We would also love to feature more ideas on our site, so if you are interested please let us know!

Colored Pearl Custom Picks

Are you looking for a custom guitar pick in a color that perfectly fits your design? Try out our colored pearl picks! Shown below is an example of how a customer fit their design together with the colored pearl pick option:

The customer had the text “Hot Copper,” and they chose a flame graphic from our clip art library. Then, they chose a copper color for the picks so that all elements of the design go together!

Our colored pearl picks are the same celluloid material as the white pearl picks, but they can be custom color matched in addition to having a custom design printed on them. When you place your order, there is a full color palette to allow for the color choice for the picks. This is a great option if our other picks don’t come in the exact color you are looking for. Also, colored pearl picks are wonderful for weddings since they can be matched to specific wedding colors!

Check out Rien ne va plus!

Today we are pleased to feature a blog about Rien ne va plus, a band from Austria that loves Clayton products! Rien ne va plus were formed in 2008. Due to the experience of every single band member
they decided to record their first demo cd, without having had one single live gig prior to the recording.
With the help of Lost Dreams, Rien ne va plus made substantial progress with their studio work, and so the demo was released at the end of September.
A short time after the release, Rien ne va plus got the chance to be the only support of Soulfly, based on the excellent feedback of their fans and the good reviews of a few online magazines. Furthermore, RNVP were voted under the Top 3 of Earshot magazine’s reader charts.
Shortly after that a new member joined RNVP: Mr. Able, on the turntables. A lot of great shows (and festivals) followed; for example the supports of Biohazard, Volbeat, Papa Roach and Exilia.
In 2012 Rien ne va plus went to Hollywood to record their new cd with the grammy-nominated producer Ulrich Wild, who worked with such bands as: Pantera, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, White Zombie and Static-X.
Rien ne va plus were supported with features by Shifty Shellshock (Crazy Town), Tony Camposs (Soulfly, ex-Static-X)– who even played the bass on the whole album–, Zoltan Farkas (Ektomorf), and Steven Medina Hufsteter (Tito & Tarantula).
So, while the songs are now in mixing process, Rien ne va plus is looking forward to getting things started! They wrote to us to let us know that they are proud to play with Clayton picks!

Pick of the Week — The Tom Dixon Band

This week’s Pick of the Week was made for Tom Dixon of The Tom Dixon Band.

“Tom Dixon is an award winning vocalist and entertainer who, like many other performers, got his start in music singing in the church choir. He was born on a small farm in Tewksbury, MA and moved to New Hampshire in the 1st grade. Tom always knew he wanted to be a singer. He spent his younger days singing along to old Kenny Rodgers tapes that his father would play. Tom experimented with many different genres of music from rock and country to even R & B.  In the end, you just can’t take the country out of the boy. After watching the “Garth Brooks LIVE from Central Park” video he declared, “I am going to do that!” This was the beginning of what has become one of New England’s hottest country bands.

Tom had taken guitar lessons at a very young age, but put it down for many years. In college he decided to pick it up again and the moment he learned a few chords he was itching to learn how to write music and start a band. Tom gathered up a few band members and they started to work on honing their craft. Tom made sure that they spent months down in the basement learning the tunes and making sure they were tight.  Tom didn’t want to just play in a band, he wanted to put on a show.  When they finally starting booking gigs there was no stopping the them! Tom has continued to hone his craft as a vocalist, songwriter, entertainer and guitarist.  He was named the NHCMA “Male Vocalist of The Year” in 2005, “Duo of the Year” 2006 with his friend Jodie Cunningham and most recently the 2011 New England Country Music Organization’s (NECMO) Entertainer of The Year.

Tom has continued to work on his song writing skills and has played several writers nights and open mics in Nashville, TN at places such as the legendary Blue Bird Cafe. Tom pulls influences from such artists as:  Gary Allan, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Jason Aldean and legends like Johhny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.  Tom is determined and will not let go of the dream. With the band that they have built, he has had an opportunity to open for artists such as:  Alan Jackson, The Zac Brown Band, Sugarland, Phil Vassar & Dusty Drake.  Tom and the band will also be opening for Eric Church in August of 2012.”

About The Tom Dixon Band:

“With a unique combination of smooth country vocals and an explosive live performance, The Tom Dixon Band has given birth to a new way of delivering that sweet country sound, with a heartpumping, foot-stomping beat that can only be viewed as a bit spicy, smooth, southern country rock. In 2012 The Tom Dixon Band is  touring the east coast from Maine to Virginia.  Since forming in 2005, The band’s every performance commands the stage and draws the excitement and rapt enthusiasm of their audience. They have captivated audiences in a multitude of venues by keeping their focus on bringing the most up-to-date and entertaining show possible. The Tom Dixon Band has been invited to perform in many high profile venues where they deliver the opening performance for such notable acts as Alan Jackson, The Zac Brown Band, Sugarland, Phil Vassar, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kip Moore and Dusty Drake as well as live back-up vocals & rhythm guitar for Nashville’s own Crossin’ Dixon. The band has been included in shows for 97.5 WOKQ (Dover, NH) on numerous occasions including 7 years in a row for the WOKQ Countryfest at Prescott Park in Portsmouth, NH. The Tom Dixon Band released their first original CD, “Rock Hard Country”, back in 2007 and then their second album entitled “Truckin” in 2011.” Band members include: Tom Dixon – Lead Vocals / Rhythm Guitar, David Wilson – Lead Guitar/Vocals, Billy “Thumpah” Ferraro – Drums, Leo Melanson – Fiddle/Steel/Guitar/Vocals and John “Crawdaddy” Crawford – Bass.

Lefty Williams

We wanted to share a  video from one our Endorsed artists Left Williams. The video is an interview with him, Lefty Williams Interview.  Not just a great one-armed guitar player, a great guitar player. A skilled guitarist with over two decades of experience, Lefty Williams holds songcraft and musicianship at a premium. By emphasizing each equally on his ironically titled sophomore album Snake Oil, he engages and enlightens the listener. In turn, we fall for Williams’ powerful guitar licks and candid songs, often long before the origin of his nickname—he was born without a right hand—is clear. And by then, it’s just another dimension to his talent. “I definitely don’t wanna shy away from my arm,” says the Atlanta born-and-bred songwriter/musician, who’s been playing guitar since age 4. He started out strumming with the end of his “nubb,” and fashioned his first prosthetic pick at 6. “I was just using the skin on my arm—the same way a fingerstyle player would use his thumb. Then I wanted to play faster.” On his grandfather’s hunch, Lefty approached his prosthetician who devised a sock-like leather wrap. “It didn’t work at all,” he laughs, saying he finally “tore apart my prosthetic arm,” using the strap and part of the harness to fashion something that worked. Henceforth a self-taught musician, Lefty refined his skills by listening. “After my dad taught me basic chords, he showed me how to figure it out on my own. I remember we were listening to the guitar solo part of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and my dad pointing out all the guitar parts that were going on in the background and saying, ‘That’s the kinda stuff you gotta listen for. If you can figure all those out and how to play ‘em at the same time, you can make it sound like the record.’” Soon Lefty was transcribing songs by Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin and Yes before moving on to more difficult material. By 11, he was playing in bands. “Death metal!” he laughs. While playing upright bass in the school orchestra he learned how to read music, and in 1998 he made his way to the Atlanta Institute of Music to hone his guitar skills. There he found that his condition put him on equal—if not higher—footing than his peers and instructors at the Atlanta Institute of Music, who envied his “perfect” picking technique. “A lot of guitar players change between moving their wrists and their elbow and their fingers,” he says. “Mine never really changes.” After graduating with honors, Lefty was offered a teaching position at AIM. During that time, he gravitated from metal to grunge bands learning valuable lessons from each. “I can shred if I want to,” he says, “but I get really bored with that. The one thing I took from grunge music was not soloing, just taking your time and making your songs as good as you can possibly make them.” This knowledge served him well as he grew into the bluesy, jazzy style he plays today, which nods to Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Miles Davis, Stevie Ray Vaughn and early Led Zeppelin—all artists that understand the importance of a great song. Lefty also heeded their performances, and worked to construct a combustible live show with the Lefty Williams Band, which quickly became a big draw at local and regional clubs like Smith’s Olde Bar (Atlanta), Murphy’s (Boone, North Carolina) and The Dunedin Brewery (Dunedin, Florida). The LWB has also opened for the likes of Gov’t Mule, Tim Reynolds, Little Feat, Jimbo Mathus, Col. Bruce and the Quark Alliance, Chris Duarte Group, Blackberry Smoke, and . In 2006, Lefty recorded his debut album, Big Plans, produced by John Keane (REM, Widespread Panic). It brought a dynamic range of music to the table, from high energy like “Shine Begins to Fade” to soulful tracks like “Sunny,” in which Lefty’s innate sense of groove and melody, coupled with an expressive, visceral guitar sound, coalesce. Big Plans received raves from Relix, Hittin’ the Note, and Jambase.com, and Williams toured for 18 months behind it, all the while writing like a fiend. By the end of 2007, he got the itch to return to the studio. Once again teaming with Keane, who says “Lefty’s sound is a compelling combination of honest, heartfelt lyrics and masterful rhythm and blues muscle,” Lefty reaches deep into personal experience on Snake Oil. “There’s a lot more honesty in these songs,” Lefty says. The dirty, groovin’ title track refers to two-faced industry types, specifically “a guy who promised me the world and then kinda hosed me.” His divorce fuels the funky “Thank You,” where he acknowledges the silver lining, and thanks his ex for kicking him out. “We’re both better off now.” And the sweet, tender “A Little Bit of Faith” (featured on the Relix CD sampler for June 2008) is written for “my current wife. It’s just a promise to her that I’m not gonna goof around on her.” Musically, Lefty soars on Snake Oil, ratcheting up the earthy yet sophisticated sound of Big Plans. He achieves a coolly smoldering burn—merging King’s world with Davis’s—with “On the Prowl;” suffers through his slide guitar on the gospel-tinged “In the Valley;” channels playful lust on the jumpin’ “Hey Mama;” and creates a taut, stinging three-minute guitar feast with “Salt Stained Moment.” The LWB’s taut grooves are augmented by two guests: Todd Smallie (The Derek Trucks Band) plays bass on “Why Didn’t You Call,” and “On the Prowl” and “Hey Mama” feature blues luminary and fellow Atlanta resident Tinsley Ellis. Says Ellis, “I was knocked out by Lefty the first time I heard his music on MySpace. I just knew that I had to seek him out and hear more of his stuff. He is a veritable triple threat on certainly guitar but also as a soulful vocalist and clever songwriter. The fact that he is out there winning over fans one at a time with his nonstop touring schedule is definitely something that I can relate to. I was thrilled when he asked me to guest on his new album.” Having already given many of the songs on Snake Oil a live test drive, Lefty looks forward to presenting them fully realized on another lengthy tour in 2008. Mostly, though, he’s chomping at the bit to play live, electrifying audiences with his musical virtuosity and heartworn songs. “Let’s just make some cool music,” he says. “That’s all I’ve ever really cared about.”

Tallboy

We just wanted to share Tallboy’s Announcement of their new single with you!

After having successfully released two previous albums, We Aren’t The Championsin 2009 and This Logic Will Destroy Us in 2011 Tallboy  www.facebook.com/Tallboymusic gears up to release their third installment “Expectations and Resentment”, and have decided to give the fans / public a single “Subtle” before the hard release on July 24th, 2012.  It’s become evident that the direction of writing with lyrics and composition has evolved based on the fans response to the prior releases. Staying true to their high energy music definitely runs con-current with Tallboy’s exhausting off the hook live show that can be described as a hyperactive Tasmanian Devil out to cause mayhem and chaos in the constant use of antics that involve the fans directly. Expectations and Resentment will deliver 11 powerfully insane tracks with the lineup and order TBA in the CD Press Release … July.  “Through our constant struggle to explain our surroundings and the people in it we bring you our new chapter, “Expectations and Resentments. Our new single “Subtle” defines the child in us all, escaping the judgement of the rest. With this onslaught of riffs, it’s like a high five to the face…. with a brick.”  quotes Jimmy Roberts, Tallboy’s frontman and lead singer.

Tallboy gave their fans a jolt and teased them with few new tasty treats in untested waters at the show finale of Tortured Souls Tour, April 28th at the Hawthorn Theatre in Portland Oregon. Having never performed at this venue, it was a true test for Tallboy and they certainly did not disappoint as the crowd loved every second of the outrageous stage show. You can hear the new song Subtle here at www.reverbnation.com/tallboy. Tallboy recently signed to Rage On Stage Management where in the next month plans for a short run tour supporting the CD release will be announced. Frank James, President of ROSM www.rageonstagemgmt.com says “It’s one of the most exciting bands I’ve had the pleasure of working with. The undeniable talent and musicianship that Tallboy brings to our roster simply expands our horizons to higher levels.”

Pick of the Week — Tryst

This week’s Pick of the Week was designed and ordered by Charlton Young for his band, Tryst. Tryst, is a “top 40” acoustic cover band.  They play a lot of the newer pop songs that are coming out and do a lot of mash ups with songs you would never think to mash up.  Their influences include Chevelle, Howie Day, Boyce Avenue, Cee-lo green, Jason Derulo, Oasis, Bruno Mars, Eminem, Pink, and Ke$ha. The band has been around for a few years, but Charlton joined just a couple months ago after their guitar player left without any notice and forced them to cancel a bunch of gigs.  Charlton says that this set-back upset a lot of bar and club owners, so it has been difficult for Tryst to get back into the scene, but slowly they are getting back out there.  Find out more about Tryst on their website at www.tryst-chicago.com

Tryst’s custom guitar picks were made on our white delrin guitar pick material, and the bright white really makes their vibrant red logo “pop!” To create and order your own custom picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!

ODDSLANE

ODDSLANE is a uniquely blended mix of driving rock & roll riffs and solid grooves with an overall pop sensibility. They create music that fuses diverse influences from a wide range of styles, but maintains the integrity of what has become their own original sound. The band primarily focuses on the material of singer/songwriter Doug Byrkit, who in 2003 co-founded the group with longtime musical partner Brian Zielie. Doug and Brian’s partnership goes back many years with their first band together while still in high school. Since, they have maintained a close working relationship that has lasted through college and a host of musical projects. Together they can boast such accomplishments as sharing the stage with diverse artist such as Lifehouse, Pete Yorn, and Walter Trout as well as having toured Korea, Japan, and the Pacific Rim. As the core members of ODDSLANE, the pair has formed a creative relationship that blends their broad range of musical influences, ranging from The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to Tower of Power and Miles Davis, with their years of experience recording and touring. To the outside observer, it may seem that Brian plays a small role in the creative process, but his influence on Doug over the years has been the spearhead to the evolution of his songwriting. ODDSLANE (originally under the name THE BREAKERS) was formed in 2003 out of the ashes of several other defunct St. Louis groups (Zito, Flynova, Nadine, and The LP Outsiders to name a few) to work on selected material from Doug’s recent demo projects. Shortly, they began recording these songs and playing live to a steadily growing fan base. This first line up of the group quickly produced two EP’s. The first of which, THE BOTTLENECK SESSIONS, twice earned them attention from the Memphis Regional Grammy Chapter along with some high profile national and international songwriting contests. It also caught the ear of those at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Sun Studio, most widely known as the studio that gave birth to Elvis, has been recording legends for years. Along with Elvis, the likes of BB King, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and more recently U2, Vertical Horizon, Maroon 5, Liz Phair, 3 Doors Down, The Calling, and Better Than Ezra have all recorded at there. ODDSLANE joined these ranks by invitation on the studio’s part as an effort of there’s to promote emerging artist. Both of these recordings were later combined into what became the release simply entitled “SESSIONS”. The follow-up recording, SONGS FOR YOUNG EXECUTIVES, is the group’s first full-length album. Although an unconventional approach, this recording was a collection of the most honest and well crafted songs to ever come from songwriter Doug Byrkit. The album contains 13 tracks loosely based around the theme of corporate greed; a subject Doug had became all too familiar with while working in Corporate America before recently leaving to complete a graduate music degree and to devote more time to music and ODDSLANE. The lyrical content gives a sometimes tongue-in-cheek and sometimes blatantly unapologetic slant on those negotiating the corporate jungle. Even though there are some heavy themes that run throughout, most of the songs are ambiguous enough to be interpreted multiple ways by the listener, thus making the album very easy for a broad range of fans to connect with. Aside from the obvious lyrical message of the record, Songs For Young Executives delivers the pinnacle of Doug’s musical evolution. The album is a mix of musical influences and real world playing experience, which along with the solid groove foundation provided by drummer Brian Zielie, merge into what can only be described as a true representation of ODDSLANE’s own unique rock & roll sound. The album’s single “Miles Away” has been featured on the hit television series THE DEADLIEST CATCH on THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL, and continues to garner attention across the web and other media. The album and single have also gained industry attention, earning a publishing deal from Grammy nominated producer George McClure’s Nashville publishing house as well as several independent film score and web placements. Currently the group performs in and around the St. Louis area in several different forms, from full rock band to acoustic solo gigs. Check the CALENDAR PAGE for a full list of current bookings. They are also busy putting the finishing touches on a brand new full length album due later this year.

Also, they have a page on Kickstarter, be sure to check it out! You can preorder their album for $1 through the site!

Award winning Guitarists Roger Harmon and Jonathan Barlow are versatile musicians with careers that involve performing various kinds of music, composing and arranging music for publication, and promoting their work as recording artists. They also periodically receive grant funding and cash-prize awards. They both earned Master of Music degrees in classical guitar from the University of Denver (DU) where they met and began performing together. Since graduation, their alma mater has taken notice of their accomplishments and not only written an article about them for the alumni magazine but also invited them to be guest lecturers in a career workshop entitled “Entrepreneurship in Music.” Although classically trained, they pride themselves on their abilities in many genres including jazz and popular styles. As signed recording artists with Azica Records they share a roster with guitar luminaries Jason Vieaux, David Leisner, and Grammy-winning jazz pianist Bill Cunliffe. Roger and Jonathan’s music is distributed internationally by Naxos of America, has received traditional radio play, and can be heard on Pandora, Last.FM, Rdio, and Spotify. They recorded their first album under the name Massif Trio, a group formed by Jonathan to perform his arrangements of 19th century German art songs for 2 guitars and voice. Their album Massif Trio Plays Schumann, Schubert and Strauss garnered reviews from American Record Guide and All Music Guide; it was praised as “a masterful performance filled with keen musical insight, evocative text painting, and enticing sound quality.” The arrangements found on the album are published with Clear Note Publications. Jonathan is also published with Lathkill Music Publishers and Soundboard guitar journal published one of his arrangements and wrote an article about him. His work has been called “fabulous” by Guitarnotes, ”superb” by Steve Marsh of Classical Guitar Magazine, and “tasteful, impeccably written and exceptionally enjoyable” by Rovi Music. A growing number of university music libraries carry his publications. Roger and Jonathan are proud to be endorsed artists with Steve Clayton Guitar Picks, Godin Guitars, Curt Mangan Strings, and Sfarzo String Company. They are represented by Denver booking agency Masterful Musicians and have won many awards including: The Orville Moore Memorial Award – from the Allied Arts, Inc.- given for “achievement in German art song,” and the ASCAPlus Award – from the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) – a national award given for “creative contributions to American music.”

Pick of the Week — Freaky Urban Troopers

The chosen Pick of the Week this week was made for the band Freaky Urban Troopers. They are a funk-rock/progressive-rock band from Vienna/Austria founded in 2011 who are currently starting out, playing (and winning;) several band-contests with national and international gigs and recording their first album in summer 2012. Here is a bio taken from their official site at http://www.freakyurbantroopers.com/:

Groovy beats, funky rock-guitars, freaky rhythms, fantastic melodies and a voice which enlightens your soul with pure desire and deliciousness. We come to rock your house, whatever you are up to. You may have heard of urban legends? …well…then you will probably like THIS:

Legend has it that it all started out as a songwriting-project between Juri and Michi in a shabby little students’ apartment in the slums of Alsergrund, Vienna, back in the late last decade, growing with the congeniality of their comrades in arms into something more inspiring, inconceivably ingenious and thriving than they would have ever imagined (isn’t it nice to be so down to earth besides being extremely modest at the same time?). Others say it was pure determination…or neither of it…who will ever know?

Fact is, that five talented artists with music in their heart and full devotion to their musical goals are on a mission to spread their freaky urban sound among their audience, keeping them procking and grooving. Freaky Urban Troopers are a force to be reckoned with…seriously…

You can also find out more about Freaky Urban Troopers on their facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/freakyurbantroopers.

The Freaky Urban Troopers picks were made on our white pearl material, which nicely supports their detailed red and black logo art. To design and order your own custom made guitar picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com!

Pick of the Week — Tudor Adrian Negru/Ronin/Anomaly

This week’s Pick of the Week was ordered by Clayton customer Tudor Adrian Negru. Tudor is a “previous guitar player in Romanian heavy-metal bands Refractara, Ronin and currently lead-guitar in a newly established band called Anomaly (http://www.facebook.com/anomalybandcluj). With the main influences of the band straying more into the hard-core/metal areas but with a taint of nu-metal and hard-rock, Anomaly tries to bring something unique to the musical scene in Cluj-Napoca and Romania. The band is currently working on writing material for their first demo album which should be finished by July 2012 and have already had several live performances along with some of the most well established and appreciated bands in the scene.
In order to bring that huge metal grind to the overall sound of the band, using heavier string gauges really does make a difference. Still, a common challenge that every guitar player in this genre faces is how to keep the tone tight and defined while also making it easier on yourself when playing heavy gauges.”
Tudor explains how he found Clayton picks: “Having being recommended Clayton USA and being handed a custom Clayton pick some time ago by one of the most established metal guitar players in the field, Balauru’ of Trooper, the search for that missing and much-needed element ended. It wasn’t long until I turned to have my own custom order with Steve Clayton USA. I find it that the Acetal 1.9 mm gauge suits my needs perfectly. The matte finish really keeps the pick where and how you need it to be while the material-gauge combination means that I can finally get that attack, control and tone definition that I was very much searching for even in the middle of a crazy live gig.”
“The custom layout features the above mentioned 1.9 mm Acetal standard shape but with the “Ronin” logo which stands for “one with no lord nor master” inspired by Japanese culture. The custom design was provided by established artist Paul Pantazescu (www.paulpantazescu.com) and in conjunction with Clayton craftsmanship it screams attitude, professionalism and strength.” To order your own custom guitar picks like Tudor’s, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!

Pick of the Week — Jeff Strahan

This week’s Pick of the Week was made for blues artist Jeff Strahan.  Jeff usually plays with a three piece band made up of himself (guitar), bass and drums.  He also plays piano and B-3.  Here are a couple reviews of Jeff:

“Strahan is a fiery Texas spirit, a killer guitar player & piano pounder and singer, as wild as the high plains from which he hails, and as cool as the hill country where he lives. He’s as real & strong as lightning, I swear, and I love being around him, to hear how he’s going to knock me out next.” -Walt Wilkins

“Hell, I’m just going to say it: he out Buddy-Guys Stevie Ray.. ., then [he’ll] play guitar and piano simultaneously. He’ll whang a quick rhythm chord and then, with just his right hand, break out a 55-gallon drum of Jerry Lee whupass on the keyboard.”
– Bill Aspinwall, Texas Music Journal (Jul 28, 2009)
