Pick of the Week, Foo Fighters

Our pick of the week for the first week of April is the Foo Fighters pick! We have been making picks for the Foo Fighters for a number of years.  They always come up with some really neat design ideas, ranging from drawings of their kids, or one of my favorites is glossy black ink of a bomb on a dark charcoal matte pick. We had never thought of trying that, but it turned out very cool looking when they made those. You can see those picks on Dave Grohl’s mic stand in the picture below.  This week we are featuring one of their newest designs, which has their Foo Fighter logo on it in Red and Blue.  The back of the picks have XXX on it in different colors. We thought this was a really classic design and wanted to feature it.  These pick are printed on our Acetal Rounded Triangle 1.00mm.  Acetal is the pick most of our big name bands use. It has a great sound, and holds up without breaking during their long performances. It is a true Professional players pick. You can see more of their picks in our blog here.

Tallboy signs with Clayton

A new 5 piece progressive metal rock band named “Tallboy” becomes endorsed by Clayton. Tallboy is a band from Medford, OR. They became finalists in the “Last Band Standing” as their amazing live performances continue to carry them to success. The members currently are Jimmy Roberts (vocals), Angel Alvarez and Justin Bullen (drums/percussion), Kevin Kaufman (lead guitarist), and Brandon Cregan (rhythm guitar). They like to use our Clayton Acetal 1.26 standard shape picks, along with our orange and yellow colored delrins. Tallboy has also performed with such bands as Hinder, Papa Roach, KMK, and Floater. They have two CD’s, their popular “No Hindsight For the Blind” and an EP, “We Aren’t the Champions” Be sure to checkout their shows for 2010 through their website www.myspace.com/tallboymusic1

Pick of the Week, Todd Simpson and Mojo Child

This week we selected a good example of a pick on our Ultem material. We love this pick, because it uses all kind of different shades of brown on it.  Ultem can only be imprinted with either brown, red or black. These colors look best with its Amber hue.  Todd Simpson is a very accomplished musician.  He has shared the state with the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Huey Lewis,Paul Thorn and Phil Lesh and friends. Todd plays blues combined with a southern rock vibe.  He even recently preformed at the Whiskey A Go Go in L.A.  For more information on Todd and his high energy band check out the website: www.toddsimpsonandmojochild.com.

From NBA to Music “The Ray Johnston Band”

Ray Johnston has a story we all should hear about.  He has gone from the NBA to his band now”The Ray Johnston Band”  The video below gives you an inspiring story of how one person continues to live his dreams even when the toughest obstacles can come along.  Ray was a former Dallas Mavericks NBA player that had to walk away from the NBA due to unexpected leukemia.  He bounced back after going through a coma and many days being in the hospital.  Jason Mraz said, ” When you listen to music…ahh yeah the person gets me…they know what it’s about and your now one of those guys.”  This Jason claims about Ray Johnston’s music.  He likes to use our popular acetal .63mm guitar picks and we will show his new picks once we finish them this week.  It is our pleasure to support such an inspiring musician and we look forward to following The Ray Johnston Band throughout the year.  For upcoming shows and more information you may go to these links www.rayjohnstonband.com, http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sweet-tooth/id327952492

Wedding Picks

Here at Clayton, Inc. we have noticed that many people choose Clayton custom picks to add a little flare to their wedding receptions. Some picks simply include the name of the couple and

the date, while others choose to add matrimonial graphics. We even have a special section in our online custom designer that has images specifically for wedding picks. More durable than anything printed on paper, the custom wedding picks are the perfect favors to give out that will help your guests remember your special day. Shown here are a few examples of the wedding

picks that we love, printed on white delrin and acetal. Also, our own employee Rob chose to design picks for his brother’s wedding (shown at right on light blue pearl)and he says that his brother and sister-in-law

both loved the picks and appreciated the originality of the idea. If you are looking for a fun addition to your wedding, consider custom picks from Clayton!

Clayton Custom Pick of the Week!

This week we selected Erich Church’s pick for our pick of the week. Eric is a very acclaimed American country music singer and songwriter.  In 2006 he released his debut album Sinners Like Me.  That album produced an amazing total of four chart singles on the Billboard country charts, including the Top 20 hits “How ‘Bout You,” “Two Pink Lines” and “Guys Like Me.” His second album, 2009’s Carolina, has produced two more singles: “Love Your Love the Most,” his first Top Ten hit, and “Hell on the Heart.”  Eric is also one of our Endorsed artists and uses our Delrin standard 1.00mm. However this week he ordered some of our Rounded Triangle Pearl Celluloid picks to try out. Our pearl picks are great for promotion since they have a beautiful mother of pearl look to them.  People can see them very easily when thrown off stage. We love Eric’s roughed up styled logo in black.  Not shown, is our Eagle logo on the back of his picks.  If you want to become an endorsed artist like Eric please click here for details.  To find out more about Eric Church click below:

John Konesky in the spotlight with Clayton

We are excited to announce the new signed artist John Konesky!   Konesky is the guitarist for Tenacious D and also the band Trainwreck. Trainwreck was so impressed with Konesky’s guitar skills and his character that they wrote a song about his talent.  Tenacious D also referred to him as the antichrist because of his shredding abilities on the guitar.

Konesky has also co-wrote a song on Guitar Hero III called “The Metal.” He also appears on  Tenacious D’s 2008 concert video and their documentary titled, “The Complete Master Works 2.”  He has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Saturday Night Live, and the American Music Awards 2006.  John currently uses our Acetal .80mm.

We are all looking forward to hearing more of John’s performances rocking through the 2010 year!  Be sure to check back for information regarding our endorsed artists and more on John Konesky.

Kyle Gass – New Featured Artist

We are proud to announce Kyle Gass (KG) of Tenacious D/Trainwreck as our new featured artist on our website at http://www.steveclayton.com/featuredartist.php! We have worked with KG for a very long time, supplying both himself and Jack Black with their custom picks on our Acetal Rounded Triangle .63mm. Kyle even signed autographs at our booth at the last NAMM trade show.  In addition to Tenacious D, Kyle has formed the band Trainwreck. KG describes Trainwreck as “a cornucopia of rock and a 5-headed hydra of pleasure”. Trainwreck is a eclectic mix of Southern Rock, Prog-Rock, Boogie, and straight-up Classic Rock and Roll, along with comedy banter and lyrics derived from the characters they’ve developed within the band. In late 2009 they released their debut album, “The Wreckoning”. It album contains 15 tracks of what they call “Wreck and Roll.” The band is fronted by biker-hayseed Darryl Donald (”Lee” of Tenacious D, or JR), and Kyle Gass (aka Klip Calhoun), and containing most of Tenacious D’s live/studio band (John Shredman, Boy Johnny, and Dallas St. Bernard). Trainwreck is currently on tour, so if you are in any of the following areas, make sure to go check out this unique band!

Hot Stamp Foil Picks

Clayton fans have you tried our new hot stamp foil picks?  Just below to the right you’ll notice I have shared some of the styles people have come up with recently. What makes the picks unique is the foil provides a shiny look that catches the eye. There are many colors to choose from for the picks. For the foil color options you may choose our popular silver, gold, red, or purple foil. The hot stamp foil picks are definitely a popular item because of the sleek looking material and bright foil. The hot stamp foil picks take generally 4-6 weeks to produce, but when finished you’ll see the amazing quality! If you would like to learn more about our custom picks give us a call at 877.752.9484

Eric Church 2010 Tour Picks

Eric Church is one of our endorsed artists and we just wanted to let you know he is one of country’s hardest working artists. We could say working a little bit too hard after last fall.   While performing in New York, he was stomping so hard on stage that he hurt his ankle. He still finished the show and is ready to set the stage for his 2010 tour with our Clayton custom picks. Here are the picks you might get at one of his shows if you’re lucky. He’s already sold out for this Thursday’s show at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville.  Church’s picks are the white pearl rounded triangle with the gauge at 1mm.  The white delrin 1mm standard pick is another choice for Church. He has a top 10 hit with his song “Love Your Love the Most,”
one of his songs on his new Carolina album. Another big hit on the album is “Hell On the Heart.” Eric is a rising star that we are excited to follow this year. We look forward to supporting Eric Church during his 2010 tour.

If you are an artist that is also interested in becoming endorsed by us, you may mail us information regarding record label, band picture, tour schedule, and type of Clayton picks you use. There is a full list of information you can find through our contact information on our Steve Clayton website. Any questions you have for us you may email to questions@steveclayton.com.

Ultimate Ultem

One of the pick materials that we use here at Steve Clayton is called Ultem, and it is often overlooked when designing custom picks. While the Ultem picks are slightly more limited in the area of design because they can only support three different colors, they are appreciated for their durability and strong playing quality. When designing Ultem picks, users of our custom site may submit any design that contains black, brown, and/or red colors. These three colors can make for an appealing combination against the light tan color of the picks. The result is a classic, sometimes rustic appearance. We have received feedback from many people who say that they are highly satisfied with these picks, both for their usability and long-lasting designs. The Artisan Guitar pick shown here is a perfect example of a strong design for the Ultem picks because of the rich brown color and the smooth, distinct lines. These picks are a great choice for advertising, and graphics always look professional on the semi-tranparent material.

Our Employee of the Month – Juana

We wanted to share with everyone that our employee of the month for February is Juana!!!  Juana is one of our employees that we employ in factory with a developmental disability. One of our goals as a company is to give back to society, and we do this by providing jobs for individuals in our community that have disabilities.  For over 20 years continuously we have employed disabled individuals in the production of our products.  We average about 25 of these individuals at at time. With about a quarter of them working on location in our factory.  Everyone loves having Juana around! She always is friendly and is quick to make everyone smile.  Juana was awarded a custom pick necklace with her name on it for being a super star in our packaging department!

New Endorsement – Ian Severson of Future Leaders of the World

Congratulations to Ian Severson becoming our new endorsed artist!  Severson currently is the guitarist for the band Future Leaders of the World. In 2004 the band was formed in Buffalo, New York recording a demo in Los Angeles.  They signed with Epic Records for their full release of LVL IV featuring the hit “Let Me Out.”  Future Leaders of the World has their sound comparable to the Nirvana grunge.

Severson has also played as guitarist for the band Gingerjake.  He was given the name as “shrediculous” while playing with Gingerjake in 2003.  The band recorded with producer Cameron Webb who also produced Tenacious D.  “Karats” was a big hit getting lots of airplay on the Mpls station 93x.  Congrats again Ian for becoming our new endorsed artist!  We look forward to supporting you with our Clayton guitar accessories and specialized custom picks.

Miss Ida Ljungqvist Signs at NAMM for Clayton

The Playmate of the Year Miss Ida Ljungqvist was in full bunny costume signing autographs and handing out picks with her signature on them at NAMM 2010 for us.  She had a very long line of fans waiting to get her autograph!  To see the whole line of Playboy products please check out our website at: www.playboyguitars.com.

Our New Glow in the Dark Custom Guitar Picks

You may have noticed that we started offering Glow in the Dark custom guitar picks about 2 months ago.  Since the very hour they went live on our website, we have been getting tons of orders for them.  Way more than we ever anticipated. Here is a picture of a few of the ones we shipped out yesterday.  Our Glow in the Dark picks can only be printed with black ink.  In the dark the black ink allows you to still see the image when it glows.  I will try to get a picture of what the look like in the dark soon.

How long was that line???

I have been asked so many times how long our line was at NAMM to meet Kyle Gass.  We do know that it spanned a couple of isles and was extremly long. We were lucky enough to recently obtain some video footage that shows at least half of the length of the line. The other half of the line goes to the right, and was broken up in order to allow traffic to flow by. Click on the picture below to view the Quicktime movie.

Pictures of our NAMM booth

We have been getting lots of requests to put up pictures of our 2010 NAMM booth. I finally got around to getting them on here.  We had a double decker booth this year with a lounge at the top.  In addition we had 2 sound proof offices to conduct meetings in. As anyone who has ever been to NAMM knows, it is very loud! Without the sound proof rooms it can be quite impossible to get any business done, especially in Hall C were we are located.

Kyle Gass just won’t Rest until Clayton is the Best!

After 3 hours of signing autographs at the Clayton booth at NAMM 2010, Kyle had a few words to say about his favorite pick company.

Kyle Gass Signs at Clayton NAMM booth

Yes, it is true! Kyle Gass of Tenacious D / Trainwreck came to the Clayton Booth at NAMM 2010 to do

kyle-gass-blog1a signing for all his fans.  Hundreds and hundreds of his fans

showed up to meet him and get

img_3523

an autograph with a line that spaned over 3 aisles!  Some fans waited in line over an hour to be one of the

first to meet him. Kyle did not disappoint, and signed for 3 straight hours without stopping!   Kyle has been a long time user of Clayton Acetal Rounded Triangle .63mm picks.  Clayton has been doing custom imprinting for Kyle Gass and Jack Black for over 10 img_3522years now! Kyle came by to promote his band Trainwreck and theirimg_3501 new album Theimg_3509 Wreckoning.  He signed Trainwreck posters and gave out limited edition Tenacious D: In the Pick of Destiny picks with his printed signature on the back. Not to mention he was also asked to sign lots of Tenacious D memorabilia.  Kyle Gass caused such a commotion at NAMM it required 8 security guards to keep the crowd under control! Keep checking back for a blog about Kyle Gass’ band Trainwreck and a video about why Kyle just won’t rest!

Full Color Black Raven

Just wanted to give everyone an update on some of the amazing picks we are printing on our black raven material. We have been getting so many interesting designs, we can’t help but share these with everyone. All of the ones I selected today show all kinds of different shading, effects and detail. One of the hardest things to get to turn out on a pick are flesh tones. As you can see on the Krakshi pick we really got the realism of the hand. Plus all of the picks have incredible detail. If you are interested in purchasing some of our black raven picks you won’t regret it! They come in 3 gauges, .50mm, .80mm, and 1.00mm. Prices for these picks start at only $39 for 100 white imprint and $69 for 100 full color imprinting.

DHL & Cricket

We apologize for not updating our blog sooner, we have been extremely busy around here this summer! We just got finished with two large dhljobs for DHL cricketand Cricket. Both were printed on our Promo material. The DHL design worked really well on the promo since this material seems to soak up any type of background! We printed two types of Camo backgrounds for an event they are doing for the National Guard. Cricket decided to change their order up a bit this time and just went with their standard logo. The green letter really makes this simpler deisgn pop! Look for upcoming blogs on this months favorite Custom picks, and some new black picks!

Byron Nemeth

When this CD cover came across my desk it automatically caught my interest, it’s just simply put wicked looking! tfwiSo I popped it in the computer to listen to, and wow this guy is extremely talented! We endorsed Byron in Februrary 2009. He had picks made m_e50cd55585a343f4a87a4972b9a86420with artwork that was designed for him by Hugh Syme. He uses the Acetal, Standard, 1.26mm picks.  My favorite track was Frankenstein’s Lullaby and I would definently recommend you check at his music for yourself at either his website, or myspace. Byron is definently a busy guy, I saw on his myspace that Madonna was wearing a BNG t-shirt, and Paris holding up his CD at the Grammys! His current CD “The Force Within” was recorded at his studio Pacifica Studios, and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London by Mastering Engineer Nick Webb, and the Cd artwork is by lengedary RUSH artist Hugh Syme. We were very excited to endorse this amazing artist and look forward to seeing more unique picks from him.

James Otto’s New Picks

We just got finished with an order for James Otto. He went with a completely different design since he has a new single and album coming out. The new design looks great! james_ottoI just went over to his myspace to check out his new single, “Since you brought it up”. Like his other songs this one is great, and the lyrics rock! I especially liked the chorus, it’s pretty catchy. Jame’s personally uses our Acetal, Rounded Triangle, 1mm picks. If you haven’t had a chance to here his new single yet it is definently worth checking out (available on his myspace, linked above)! Also, his myspace has a list of all his upcoming shows if your interested in checking him out live.

Picks that make you go “aww”

Yes, believe it or not we do get orders for picks that have completely adorable artwork on it. cute_kidsThe scan for this post is of picks that prompted us to make this post. They were printed on Ultem, in the small teardrop shape. Normally we just imprint brown, red and black because they seem to imprint best on the ultem. However, since this was a thinner gauge we were able to get the yellow, orange, pink and blue to turn out quite well. We really suggest the black, brown and red because we are certain these colors always turn out well. However, we are not opposed to trying new colors so feel free to submit an order with different colors if you like. We will always send a message if we feel that it will not turn out before sending it on to production, or if it didn’t after production. These picks really are adorable, there’s just no other way to put it! Everyone here who was shown them gave the same response “Aww!” even if they wouldn’t admit it :).

Clayton’s Super Fast 48 hour Turn-around

pickgroupingYou may have noticed we ship out our custom guitar picks really, really quick. We are the fastest by far in the business. Most of our competition takes anywhere from 2-8 weeks to ship a custom order out. So, why are we able to print our picks so fast? Well, we have been doing this for 30 years, and have managed to streamline everything down to a quick and efficient process. Also this is our full time job and we have lots of dedicated professionals working at it.! A lot of our competitor websites are individuals working out of their home/ garage, and most of them have a different full time job. So, since they have so much other stuff going on, they tend to have long lead times. So when you are looking for a place to buy your picks from, taking a look at their lead time will let you know how devoted to their company they are.

A lot of our competitors also have a long turn-around time so that they can charge your card and hold onto the funds for that whole time… which is less than ideal. So basically if they take 4 weeks to ship your picks, that is 4 weeks that you have paid for those picks. At Clayton, Inc. even though we don’t take long to ship most orders, we don’t even charge your card until the picks have shipped. So you never have to worry about that!

There are some exceptions to our 48 hour shipping window though. It does not include weekends or holiday. Also, if we have to contact you regarding your artwork, then the 48 hour window starts over again once we are able to place your order into production. We will not rush your order through to make the time window if it means hurting the quality of the final product.

Here are the most common problems that can slow your order down:

#1: Too small of text – This by far is #1! When you are designing your pick in our designer, there is a small replica of your design in actual size in the lower left area of the window. If you can’t read it there, then you don’t want to submit the artwork, because you won’t be able to read it on the pick. If we think your text or graphic is too small, we will contact you and put your order on hold status because we want to make sure your text or images are clear and visible on the pick.

#2: Wrong selection of pricing – If you accidentally upload a full color graphic, but select single color pricing and submit the artwork as single color, your order will often get placed on hold so that we can verify with you if you want a graphic artist to turn the image all to one color, or if you want to upgrade your pricing.

#3. Complex artwork – If you haven’t already noticed we deal with a lot of complex artwork. It takes work to make it look good. We may do a run of your picks and decide they don’t quite look right, so the graphic artists will revisit the image, and order a re-print of the job until it looks good. Artwork like this may take up to a week to ship out. Also some-times artwork that contain over-bleeds can take a little longer as well.

#4. Out of stock material- This is really rare, but on occasion, we will be out of stock on a certain gauge of material, which can cause a delay. We notify our customers of this delay and always offer that they can switch to a different gauge or material if they are in a rush.

#5. Specialty Picks – We have a few specialty picks that don’t fit in the 48 hour time frame. These include Black Raven (4-6 weeks), Just Text (10 working days) and Colored Pearl (3 weeks). So if you are in a rush, we don’t recommend ordering these materials.

Hope that helps educate you on how we are able to ship fast, and how you can help ensure your order ships out fast. If you want to read more reasons on why you should choose Clayton Custom as your company of choice, please visit Why Choose Clayton.

A Pick from our Archives – Johnny Cash

johnny_cash1Every once in awhile when I am looking for something in my office I come across a custom pick we did from a long time ago. Just today I happened upon this Johnny Cash pick that we made. This exact pick is probably about 18 years old! Yes, very old. It is our Rounded Triangle Acetal (in Black) Johnny’s signature color, with his signature on it in white, gauge .50mm. Johnny loved our Acetal so much, but didn’t want it in white, so we had our Acetal material made in black just special for him. This pick is pretty hard to come by now a days because Johnny didn’t use them as his toss out picks. They are the true picks he played with and loved. I have often seen this pick go for over $100 on ebay. So if you ever come across this pick or already have it in your collection, It was made by Clayton! johnnycashFrom what I know most other Johnny Cash picks are either newly made fakes, or were his toss out picks. Johnny ordered 1,000’s of picks from us until his passing in 2003. He actually ordered so often from us that we would pre-make the picks a head of time. So when Johnny passed we were left with about 2,000 of his printed picks that were made in advance. People who knew we made the pick have called and begged for at least one of them, but sorry we will not give or sell the picks. They were only meant for Johnny.
