After nearly five years, the highly anticipated Judd Hoos sophomore CD is now a reality. Rarely does a recording effort involve such a length of time and such a monumental effort to produce! The actual recording was accomplished in two separate commercial recording studios, one hunting lodge in rural South Dakota, numerous motel room/studios and a few sessions that occurred as the band was rolling down the road on the way to covering the nearly 40,000 miles they travel each year. Logistics aside, the CD is a labor of love for the guys in Judd Hoos. The process is also unique for another important reason. The band underwent a major line- up change a year into the initial songwriting and after the recording had started. Drew Lerdal, guitarist and a founding member of Judd Hoos left at the end of 2009 to pursue a career as a producer/studio engineer in Minneapolis. The decision was made to bring in two exceptionally talented guitarists, Andy Young & Zach Fronce in order to fill the void created by Drew’s departure. Although Lerdal was no longer on the road performing, his contributions to Judd Hoos were far from over. Lerdal continued to work as a producer on the project even contributing vocals and guitar on a few tracks. “Drew will always be a part of Judd Hoos in my mind” says bassist Chris Hornick. It’s clear that Lerdal’s experience as a member of Judd Hoos gave him the insight and trust from the band to wield the kind the creative control a producer needs to bring out the best qualities in the music. Judd Hoos “Two” contains 14 tracks covering a wide variety of musical territory. The heavy hard-rock groove of “Stand Up” and “The End” the up-tempo power-pop of “Mistakes” and “Again & Again” and the dramatic tension of songs like “Livin” and “Selfish”, all demonstrate the maturity and confidence that has developed within the group. “All the time we spend together on the road travelling, playing shows and basically living like a second family, made it possibly to come together creatively a lot quicker than I thought,” says guitarist Andy Young. The CD captures the intricate balance of two distinct guitar styles complimenting the soaring vocals, unique harmonies and powerful drive from the rhythm section. “It’s a fun trip through our collective influences, this CD shows you why Judd Hoos is hard to define in just one genre,” says drummer Shane Funk. After selling nearly 5,000 copies of “Better Intentions” the bands first album, the interest from fans for a follow album up has been constant. Bob Zwart, the bands frontman and vocalists says, “We’re excited to see how people react to this one!” The reaction from a number of radio stations in the Midwest has already been positive with the single “Stand Up” getting airplay in several markets including KDDX (XROCK) and KSQY (KSky) in Rapid City, SD. The calendar for 2013 is nearly full and will take Judd Hoos to at least 8 states performing 120-130 shows and cover a vast number of miles. “We love playing live and experiencing the crowds reaction to the new songs everywhere we go,” says guitarist Zach Fronce. Judd Hoos “Two” will also be available at Juddhoos.com and on iTunes, Amazon, Zune, CD Baby as well as dozens of other online sources in early June.
Check out these cool picks! We loved the blue Flotsam design that was submitted for custom guitar picks by the band Treading Lemmings. This art was printed on our acetal guitar picks, which work great for graphics that include color backgrounds that cover most of the guitar pick, such as the blue background in this design. We also liked how the fine detail in the creative logo turned out so well, even on small guitar picks!
In March 2013, The Treading Lemmings released “Flotsam”. The EP serves up five delicious new tunes. Much more akin to a fine dining experience than a to trip to the local diner;”Flotsam” provides depth, complexity, sweetness at times, and occasional bitterness for balance. With the typical lyrical finesse of Christopher Quinn, this project was also spiced up by some special guests: Nashville fiddle ace, Kurt Baumer, played on a homage to Keith Moon in “Goodnight Moon,” and inter-continental arrangement help was provided by the Dentists’ (seminal 90s Brit-pop) Bob Collins on “Doing Time On Placid Drive.”

The custom guitar picks were created and ordered by Clayton customer Andy Hunt (aka Ricky), who plays rhythm (Rickenbacker) guitar for The Treading Lemmings. With the release of the new vinyl EP “Flotsam”, he wanted a new promotional pick to toss from stage. He worked with artist Carl Yonder www.carlyonder.com to take his artwork from “Flotsam” and turn it into a guitar pick design using the Clayton custom design tool.

As many of you already know, Bret Michaels is one of our featured endorsed artists. Bret Michaels started his career as the lead singer of the metal band Poisen. He also starred in the hit shows, Rock of Love with Bret Michaels , its sequels, and was the winning contestant on NBC’s reality show Celebrity Apprentice 3. He now tours the country with The Bret Michaels Band, and we were lucky enough to have him appear in our home of the Rogue Valley in Oregon! Needless to say, the Clayton team made it a priority to go to his concert and meet him in person. All of us had a fabulous time watching Bret, and his band members Dirty Ray and Pete Evick who we also supply guitar picks for. They put on a rockin’ show and we had the opportunity to meet him and take a photo after the concert was over. A big thanks to Bret, Ray, and Pete and other members of the band and tour group. We love working with you!!

We are excited to present this week’s Pick of the Week, which was made for the band Ashturn. “Ashturn is a Flemish (Belgian) band formed by Steve (drums), Raf (bass) and Mark (guitar) in 2003. After about a year of rehearsals and song writing Raf switched his bass guitar for a microphone and Tom joined the band as the new bass player. Dennis, who used to be in another band with Steve and Raf, joined the band as the second guitar player a few months later. 8 years later, Ashturn still has the same line-up. They are a bunch of very good friends who mainly want to have fun and who really enjoy making music together (which is probably the reason they have already survived this long as a band).”
“Ashturn plays a healthy mix of metal and hardcore and is influenced by a lot of modern and classic bands in both these genres. They’ve played a lot of gigs in youth clubs, rock bars and on the occasional festival, mainly in the Flemish part of Belgium but also occasionally abroad. One of the festival gigs they played was the result of Ashturn getting the most votes from the audience at a local rock contest. Their latest recording effort is an EP called “Heaven or a dark cold day in hell” which can be listened to for free in it’s entirety at www.ashturn.com. ”
“Ashturn is at the moment rehearsing for some upcoming gigs. In about two months time work will begin on some new songs which will hopefully lead to new recording sessions later. ”
To learn more about Ashturn, visit any of the following sites:
“As a bass player, I’ve always preferred the bigger rounded triangle shape picks. I play a down tuned 5 string bass so I need something to grab on to while furiously hitting the B string 🙂 I had been using the same picks for years (made by a major brand) so I started to look for a company that could make me some picks with a custom design that are also equally comfortable as the ones I was used too. This took a lot of research. No company seemed to offer the right combination of materials, thickness, shape and printing possibilities that I was looking for until I found the website of Clayton Custom. A few minutes of trying out the fantastic custom guitar pick designer led me to the conclusion that my search had ended. For the design I chose one of the very nice band logo’s that was made by our guitar player Mark Vandebroek. Once the picks arrived I was extremely happy with the quality. These picks definitely offer the comfort I was looking for. On top of that, they were actually a tiny bit stiffer than the ones from my old brand which actually improved the clear, natural but also very punchy sound I am always looking for! So, great job by Clayton custom! Now I just need to make sure I can hold on to them as everyone I show them to (fans, fellow musicians, family and friends) wants to keep one for him/herself!”
Ashturn’s picks were made on our acetal guitar pick material, in the rounded triangle shape. We especially like how the shape of the picks fit really nicely with the band logo. To create and order your own custom guitar picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!
This week’s featured Pick of the Week was made for the band Scarlet Machine. “Scarlet Machine is a four-piece rock band made up of teens from the San Francisco Bay Area. These young musicians are making music like it used to be: jamming, not manufacturing. With roots in jazz, rock and funk, Scarlet Machine is about musicianship, great songs, and energetic performances. What you see is what you get.
All too often, bands in concert sound nothing like their CD. Scarlet Machine refuses to be one of those bands. Scarlet Machine draws from a wide array of inspirations because its members are so different. Kyle’s main inspirations are bands like Creed and Paramore. Keller’s inspirations roll to Queen and Radiohead. Nick’s include AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses. Matt’s are bands like A Day to Remember and The Devil Wears Prada.
Kyle says: “We are sort of like a recipe of rock. Each of us is a certain ingredient that wouldn’t be very good by itself, but combined it tastes amazing!” Their latest studio effort, “On Fire” was released September 24th, 2011 and was recorded and engineered by Teddy Gyi, mixed by Juan Urteaga of Trident Studios and mastered by Brad Gillis of Night Ranger.Scarlet Machine will be applying their creative ingenuity to a new studio effort due for release in late 2012. Scarlet Machine will get your blood pumping. Their energy, passion and skill promise audiences nothing less than a true rock show.”
To find out more about Scarlet Machine, visit their facebook page at http://www.scarletmachine.com/. Scarlet Machine’s custom guitar picks were made on our acetal material, and we loved the intricacy of their design. To create and order your own custom picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!
The chosen Pick of the Week this week was made for the band Freaky Urban Troopers. They are a funk-rock/progressive-rock band from Vienna/Austria founded in 2011 who are currently starting out, playing (and winning;) several band-contests with national and international gigs and recording their first album in summer 2012. Here is a bio taken from their official site at http://www.freakyurbantroopers.com/:
Groovy beats, funky rock-guitars, freaky rhythms, fantastic melodies and a voice which enlightens your soul with pure desire and deliciousness. We come to rock your house, whatever you are up to. You may have heard of urban legends? …well…then you will probably like THIS:
Legend has it that it all started out as a songwriting-project between Juri and Michi in a shabby little students’ apartment in the slums of Alsergrund, Vienna, back in the late last decade, growing with the congeniality of their comrades in arms into something more inspiring, inconceivably ingenious and thriving than they would have ever imagined (isn’t it nice to be so down to earth besides being extremely modest at the same time?). Others say it was pure determination…or neither of it…who will ever know?
Fact is, that five talented artists with music in their heart and full devotion to their musical goals are on a mission to spread their freaky urban sound among their audience, keeping them procking and grooving. Freaky Urban Troopers are a force to be reckoned with…seriously…
You can also find out more about Freaky Urban Troopers on their facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/freakyurbantroopers.
The Freaky Urban Troopers picks were made on our white pearl material, which nicely supports their detailed red and black logo art. To design and order your own custom made guitar picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com!
This week’s Pick of the Week was ordered by Clayton customer Tudor Adrian Negru. Tudor is a “previous guitar player in Romanian heavy-metal bands Refractara, Ronin and currently lead-guitar in a newly established band called Anomaly (http://www.facebook.com/anomalybandcluj). With the main influences of the band straying more into the hard-core/metal areas but with a taint of nu-metal and hard-rock, Anomaly tries to bring something unique to the musical scene in Cluj-Napoca and Romania. The band is currently working on writing material for their first demo album which should be finished by July 2012 and have already had several live performances along with some of the most well established and appreciated bands in the scene.
In order to bring that huge metal grind to the overall sound of the band, using heavier string gauges really does make a difference. Still, a common challenge that every guitar player in this genre faces is how to keep the tone tight and defined while also making it easier on yourself when playing heavy gauges.”
Tudor explains how he found Clayton picks: “Having being recommended Clayton USA and being handed a custom Clayton pick some time ago by one of the most established metal guitar players in the field, Balauru’ of Trooper, the search for that missing and much-needed element ended. It wasn’t long until I turned to have my own custom order with Steve Clayton USA. I find it that the Acetal 1.9 mm gauge suits my needs perfectly. The matte finish really keeps the pick where and how you need it to be while the material-gauge combination means that I can finally get that attack, control and tone definition that I was very much searching for even in the middle of a crazy live gig.”
“The custom layout features the above mentioned 1.9 mm Acetal standard shape but with the “Ronin” logo which stands for “one with no lord nor master” inspired by Japanese culture. The custom design was provided by established artist Paul Pantazescu (www.paulpantazescu.com) and in conjunction with Clayton craftsmanship it screams attitude, professionalism and strength.” To order your own custom guitar picks like Tudor’s, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!

This week’s Pick of the Week was made for the band Whiskey Twin. “Whiskey Twin is a Minneapolis band that plays an eclectic mix of rock and alternative covers, in addition to original songs. The band met through a program at Minneapolis’ Twin Town Guitars, where bands play a set at a local bar after six weeks of rehearsals. The members of Whiskey Twin enjoyed the experience of playing together so much they wanted to continue and play their own gigs. They continue to hone their chops through ongoing involvement with one of Twin Town’s instructors, Mark Wade, who is also the bassist for the band The Melismatics.
The band is fronted by Mandy Simmons’ strong, confident and tender vocals. Mandy is supported by three diverse guitarists; Ed Fruin, Ed Wilms and John Morris. The band’s heartbeat comes from Tom Parsons on bass, and Tony Scott’s driving drums and occasional primal screams.
The band picked their name as homage to Twin Town Guitars, where they met; and Whiskey Junction, the bar in which they first played together. Ed Fruin designed the picks and took inspiration from the labels on the bottles of premium spirits.” Whiskey Twins’ picks were made on our white pearl guitar pick material, which best supports parchment background and variety of color in the design. To create your own custom guitar picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com!
See http://www.facebook.com/pages/Whiskey-Twin/253379511378342 on Facebook for Whiskey Twin band updates and future gigs.
This week’s Pick of the Week was made for blues artist Jeff Strahan. Jeff usually plays with a three piece band made up of himself (guitar), bass and drums. He also plays piano and B-3. Here are a couple reviews of Jeff:
“Strahan is a fiery Texas spirit, a killer guitar player & piano pounder and singer, as wild as the high plains from which he hails, and as cool as the hill country where he lives. He’s as real & strong as lightning, I swear, and I love being around him, to hear how he’s going to knock me out next.” -Walt Wilkins
This week’s Pick of the Week was made for the Michael Matthews Band. Formed in Southwest Florida by Craig “Michael Matthew” Strickler, ten years ago, the Michael Matthews Band is a talented group of seasoned musicians that are appealing to all audiences bringing their own style and flair to the rock music, popular cover songs and their own original material that they perform. Mix that with the heart, soul and passion that these guys have for music and you have a winning combination!! They currently play the club circuit in Southwest Florida. You can find them on Facebook and Reverbnation. The Michael Matthews Band picks were made on our white pearl material, which adds a cool marbleized effect to their black and red design. They used the custom picks to make some awesome necklaces, shown in the photo below. To create and order your own custom guitar picks, visit www.claytoncustom.com today!Shown below is a photo of the Michael Matthews Band, they are: from left to right Craig “Michael Matthew” Strickler (lead guitar & lead vocals), John Hedlund (guitar & vocals), Dean Carmel (bass & vocals) and Neil Anthony (percussion & vocals).
Trapped In Static is an alternative rock/indie band based in New York City formed by singer/musician/songwriter Athan Hilaki (previously with GAD.). The band first started using the name Trapped In Static in October 2010 with Athan on vocals & guitar but a different line-up. After a small break, the band is back with a new line-up, Athan Hilaki on vocals, guitar & keyboards, David Torres on drums and Peter Douskalis on guitar & keyboards, joined on stage by George Kostopoulos (bass). In a very short period of time – less then 4 months (Dec 2011 – Mar 2012), Trapped In Static managed to have a big impact in the NYC crowd, and the show goes on!

This week’s Pick of the Week is for the band “Sister Mary Tarantula.” They are a working rock band based in Houston, TX. They have one independent album out, and they are currently writing material for their follow up album. The members of the band are: Mark Neely/Rhythm Guitar/lead vocals, Ernest Martinez/Drums, Pablo Gonzales/Bass, and Carlos Ulloa/Lead Guitar. Their style draws from a lot of classic heavy rock, such as Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy, etc… and they do a Dio tribute band as well called “Holy Diver.” Carlos was the member of the band who ordered custom picks from us. He says that, as a performer, he was a late bloomer into the guitar love affair. He started playing drums and took up the guitar at age 21. He has now been playing for 21 years, and he can seriously site his influences as “any one whom he has ever seen play!” but some of his favorites are the usual suspects of Vai, Pertrucci & Eric Johnson. You can sample the music of Sister Mary Tarantula here: http://www.myspace.com/
