Dave Baker

Products Used: Clayton Custom Acetal Standard 1.26mm picks.

“Been using Clayton picks for 20 years! Claytons are the perfect plectrum! They enhance my tone and inspire creativity!”

Hailing from a musical family, Cleveland native Dave Baker is the grandson of Ruth Baker, who played guitar and sang backup for Roy Rogers. Inheriting her talents, Dave began playing guitar at age eight, and went on to study music composition and theory at Cleveland’s Modern Music School under the tutelage of highly acclaimed composer, arranger (Stan Kenton), and educator, Phil Rizzo. By age 16, Baker was officially a professional musician: going to school during the day and playing paid gigs in bars and clubs by night. His reputation soon earned him two Berklee College of Music scholarships, where he studied under jazz great Garrison Fuel, as well as Larry Bione, Bruce Saunders and Bruce Bartlett.  He also became an honors graduate of Cleveland State University, having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing.

Baker further distinguished himself in the professional music community when he composed and produced commercial music for the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Cardinals, WKYC-TV, Sports Time Ohio, KSDK (St. Louis), KPNX-TV (Phoenix) and Clear Channel Communications.  He could also be heard playing guitar on many commercial jingles for McDonald’s, Mr. Hero, Pearl Vision, Sterling Jewelers, Matco Tools, Ohio Lottery and Cleveland State University.  His work in Cleveland culminated in 2010 with an Emmy® nomination for musical composition and arrangement.

Dave relocated to Nashville shortly thereafter, where his broad range of experience and incredible talents have served him well as a freelance guitar slinger. As Baker’s playing had been described by Guitar Player Magazine as “non-stop guitar bliss,” he quickly built his reputation in Music City based upon his versatility and professionalism.

He has played guitar alongside such notable country artists as The Line, Luke Bryan, Thompson Square, Josh Thompson, Ashley Gearing, Darryl Worley, Justin Moore, Laura Bell Bundy, Randy Houser, Craig Campbell, Rodney Adkins, Brett Eldridge, Kip Moore, The McClymonts, Eric Paslay and, since early 2012, with Black River Entertainment recording star, Kellie Pickler. Dave is currently a standing member of her band in addition to pursuing his other music projects.

Over the course of his career Baker has performed at the White House, the Grand Ole Opry and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, plus toured the US, Australia, China, Switzerland, Germany, and Afghanistan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan and Bahrain (the Middle East twice for the USO).

Television viewers have also seen him in action on Ellen, Craig Ferguson, Dancing with the Stars, The View and Good Morning America, as well as televised Opry performances on the GAC network.

In 2014 Dave recorded and self-released his debut CD, 71 South, an eclectic album that brings the listener a collection of diverse instrumentals that encompass musical cleverness, humor and virtuosity while humbly reflecting Baker’s character.

71 South’s ten tracks underscore his variety in musical styles. From the “tongue-in-cheek” neo-classical opener, “Guitar Center Saturday” to the Eastern European tinged “The Brothel,” Baker explores a wide array of musical genres including his Latin influenced “Esteban,” Ennio Morricone-inspired “Spaghetti Western,” and the title track “71 South,” which pays tribute to a jazzier, bop affected characterization.

Baker both produced the CD and played electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, Jew’s harp and rape whistle. The album’s musicians include drummer Rich Redmond (Jason Aldean), bassist Vail Johnson (Keb’ Mo’) and multi-instrumentalist/producer John Painter (Ben Folds/Sevendust), among others. 71 South is available for purchase on iTunes and CD Baby.

Chris Martin Band

Products used: Clayton Custom 0.5mm Acetal, 0.5mm Black Celluloid, 0.8mm Black Celluloid

“We’ve used Steve Clayton custom picks from the very beginning, everyone in the band got CMB logo picks to use and share.  Not only do they look and play great, you should see the faces of the folks that end up with one at a show!  It’s like they’ve got a little piece of our dream!”  Mark White, Bass & Vocals

Chris Martin is an up and coming singer/songwriter/guitarist from the Emerald Coast of Florida, born and raised in Pensacola. His roots in traditional country music, from George Strait to Keith Whitley, have helped shape his contemporary country music sound. Chris’ easy going manner is completely evident in his smooth vocal style, delivering a uniquely recognizable “blue-eyed soul” meets “Nashville drawl” in his renditions of current country hits as well as original material. Backed by the “hottest little band in P’Cola”, the Chris Martin Band has made an indelible mark on the regional music scene, having achieved some impressive milestones for a band just over a year old. Not content to follow the typical “bar band” business model, the Chris Martin Band continue to hone their craft at fairs, festivals and concerts in the SE and beyond. With a Nashville produced, all original EP released in March 2014, and having shared the stage with the likes of Bo Bice, Charlie Daniels and Southern Rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, the future continues to look very bright for this new country artist and his band.

“Over the years I have spent tons of money on my rig always searching for that perfect tone.  Something that I was never happy with was my picks.  I could get great tone out of some, but they never felt right between my fingers, or I could get a good feel, but the tone was lacking.  After trying a Clayton pick for the first time, I was hooked.  Fantastic tone- especially when you really dig into the strings.  They feel great and never they never slip out of my grip.  I would encourage any guitarist to give them a try, you won’t be disappointed.”

Jeffry Don has spent many years on the front line of music.  He has played with bands such as TC Fambro and the Copperheads, playing on their debut EP Texas Town, he played with Level of Grace for several years helping them sign a recording contract with Tate Music Group and recorded on their album Wonderful God, which received airplay and rave reviews all over the world.  Currently Jeffry Don is working on a new project with the Tyler Steel Band.  With their fusion of Red Dirt, Rock, and Blues, the Tyler Steel Band is sure to make waves in the Texas country scene and beyond.  They are currently in the studio working on their upcoming album, Come With Me, which should be available by late spring 2014.  Be looking for them to play a city near you soon.

Clayton Endorsee Sonar Lights to tour China 2014!

DFW based original rock band Sonar Lights sets out to tour China for the second year in a row.

Dallas/Fort Worth, TX – Sonar Lights is eagerly gearing up for their second China tour in May 2014. The rock trio from Dallas/Fort Worth, TX made quite an impression last year with Chinese fans and promoters. After their successful “Enter the Snake 2013” tour, the band was promptly asked to return to rock the masses again at the Midi Festival; the largest rock festival in the country.

The past 12 months have been extremely busy for the band. In addition to their overseas touring duties, the band has built their own recording/rehearsal studio and is in pre-production for their second independently released album. They’ve accomplished all this without the backing of a label, management team or distribution deal.

ABOUT
Sonar Lights was formed in 2010 and has been hovering under the mainstream radar. Their sharp songwriting delivered by a balanced meld of mighty early heavy metal guitar hooks, pummeling rhythmic textures and melodic vocals are things that do not go unnoticed. Sonar Lights independently released their debut album, “Here We Are” in 2012 and has steadily gained credibility from fans, the media and fellow musicians alike.

Disc jockey Angela Chase from 97.1 FM “The Eagle,” the largest rock station in North Texas said on her show, “I would highly recommend that you spend the $9.99 on iTunes and download a copy of Sonar Lights album. They have quite a few good songs on it.”

The band’s image and sound has caught the attention of the industry’s top music equipment manufacturers. Sonar Lights has proudly built working sponsorships with Bogner Amplification, Eden Electronics, Essential Sound Products, George L’s, Mono Case, PRS Guitars, Trailer Trash Pedalboards, Warwick Bass Guitars, Pigtronix Effect Pedals, Clayton guitar picks and Dunlop electronics.

The band has also toured nationally and shared the stage with some of music’s biggest acts, including: The B-52’s, Vince Neil, Cowboy Mouth, Rigor Mortis, Candle Box, Mute Math, Los Lonely Boys, The Toadies and Bowling for Soup.

In addition, Pandora Internet Radio included Sonar Lights’ entire album to their program giving fans the chance to create and stream their own Sonar Lights station. You’ll most likely hear similar sounding, well recognized bands like Foo Fighters, STP, Seether and Chevell on their station.

Sonar Lights is dedicated to bringing back the ideal of creating an album with a reason for existence and delivers a style of rock that has been desperately missed.

Which White?

Over the years, Clayton, USA has added more and more pick options to our custom guitar pick line. I have realized that, currently, we offer five different white guitar pick options for custom printing, and some of you may be wondering which white pick material will be best for you?

Here is a quick guide to help you out!

1. White Delrin Picks: These are basic, bright white picks, similar to tortex material. They have a semi-gloss finish. They work best with dark, bright, and bold colors for custom designs. Black print is the best for this material.

2. Acetal Picks: Some customers choose acetal for custom picks because they have already tried our regular Clayton acetal picks and love them! Acetal picks are professional grade; known for having an excellent grip to them. They work well with a variety of colors for designs, as long as the shades are not too light. They are semi-transparent, so you want to keep this in mind for two-sided designs. They also can support full bleed backgrounds (except black) and photos.

3. Eco Picks: Eco picks are playable guitar picks, though they are not as durable as some of our other materials because they are a biodegradable plastic. However, if you are getting picks purely for promotional use, or give-aways, they are awesome because they can support absolutely ANY artwork. We have done photos, light color shades, high detail designs, and full coverage backgrounds, and they always turn out beautifully on Eco material!

4. White Pearl Picks: Our white pearl material is distinctive because it is marbleized, and has a glossy finish. These picks also work great with a wide variety of colors and can support light color shades (even light grey). You will just want to be aware that the marbleized quality will show through in the design that is printed on them (unless it is black print).

5. Carbonate Picks: Carbonate material is plain white, like white delrin, but with a gloss finish like white pearl. Carbonate, like white delrin, works best with bright and bold colors for the designs. We offer carbonate picks as our less-than-100 pick option… You can get custom carbonate picks in sets of 30 or 60, while our other white pick options have a minimum order quantity of 100.

Robots playing with Clayton Picks?!

Yes, you did read that right! However, it’s actually called a humanoid and has 78 fingers! The band is made up of three which are named March (guitarist with 78 fingers), Ashura (drummer with 22 arms) and Cosmo (keyboardist). We always love to come across crazy ways that our picks are used but seeing robots play with them is pretty amazing we have to say! Also, some good news is that these robots still require a humans help so no worries about robots trying to replace live guitarists in bands (as if they could) :-)! The Dan Varner Band

We recently just got some awesome photos from the Dan Varner Band (Clayton Endorsee) that we thought it would be fun to share with you all! Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dan has been singing since about the time he could walk. He grew up listening to his dad and uncles (with roots in the Tennessee mountains) picking their guitars. Other family members/friends would join in singing along to old country, gospel and bluegrass songs. Breaking on to the Cincinnati music scene over five years ago, Dan Varner has built a reputation as one of the most talented, hard-working and original country performers to hit the area in quite some time.

It’s never too early…

To start shopping for Christmas gifts, especially a customized gift! We do have a holiday shipping schedule on our custom site, but sometimes it can be missed so we thought we would also share it here. Custom Guitar Picks are a great gift not only for that special guitarist in your life but also for business cards, new baby announcements and more. The gift ideas for custom guitar picks are really endless, picks aren’t just for musicians ;-)! Below is our last day to order schedule based on what shipping method you choose. This is for the following pick materials only: Colored Delrin, White Pearl, White Delrin, Acetal, Ultem, Carbonate, Text Only, Eco, Metallics and Colored Pearl. Unfortunately, it is past the cut off date to receive a specialty item by Christmas, those materials are: Glow in the Dark, Black Celluloid, and Hot Stamp Foil. These do take 4-6 weeks to produce so they would likely arrive sometime after the holiday. We also often get asked if your order will be received by the holiday if you are not located in the US. To receive a package internationally by Christmas we recommend ordering FedEx Express shipping ($35.00) which takes 2-3 days and is traceable with insurance included. Also, we would strongly suggest sending an email to orders@steveclayton.com with your ORDER ID number stating these are for a Christmas gift so we can mark it to go out in time for Christmas delivery (this applies to international orders only, if you order by the dates below and one of the materials listed above you do not need to do anything else to receive by Christmas). If you have more questions regarding Christmas delivery you can email us at questions@steveclayton.com or call us at 1-877-752-9484.

Judd Hoos

Judd Hoos is an American Rock Band based in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It has been almost a year since their single,’Breathe In’ was released and charted number 23 on the iTunes rock charts. The band has spent the past year working hard on their upcoming full length album, ‘Music In The Dark’ and has never been more prepared for success.

Operating as a self contained and constantly touring band, the guys found creative ways to write and record while on the road. Things like recording drums in grain elevators and constructing vocal booths out of hotel room mattresses. The album boasts an acoustic driven Americana Rock sound with an eclectic mix of influences. From Tyler’s gorgeous, rough-hewn vocals, to the intricate guitar work, and the heartfelt songwriting, the album is a representation of where the band has come in its recent years.

The band is preparing for a very busy summer tour across the country to promote their new album,’ Music in the Dark’ including 10 nights at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. You would be hard pressed to find a harder working band that tours as much and works as hard at their craft. Combining their professionalism and experience to put on the best show out there, Judd Hoos is quickly becoming one of the country’s most sought after live acts.

The Second Wave

Spring 2012 the Swedish band La Fleur Fatale embarked on a journey to and through California. During two intense weeks they 2ndWaveplayed with legendary psych musicians and met people who was part of making the 60’s into what it later became both musically and spiritually. And in the meantime connecting the past with the present. What is the difference between then and now? Is the Anonymous movement now what 60’s anti war movement was back then?  May 3rd the documentary was released, for free, on YouTube. And May 3rd the band also released a new single, “How Long Is Too Long”, written by Duncan Faure of Bay City Rollers and Rabbitt who they met when filming. “They are really one of my favorite bands now along with Beatles plus a few others.” Duncan says.

During Easter they also recorded yet another single together with Ebbot Lundberg (The Soundtrack Of Our Lives) that will be released after the summer.

The documentary can be found right HERE (link to YouYube).
